There’s a lot of disingenuous marketing in the pet industry. Many brands claim their product(s) have the fix to whatever ails your pet. However, and I want you to read this: if, indeed, any one product was the antidote to a specific issue, or disease, it would be the standard of care. In fact, if it was really that good, and improved the situation so dramatically then that company would file a patent, and have invested large sums of money into clinical trials with the goal of having that product approved as a drug.

Now think about this: we don’t see pet food or supplement companies doing that, right? No, we do not. Because we don’t see them doing this, they are also unable to make claims that their product ‘cures’, ‘treats’, ‘mitigates’, or ‘prevents’ disease. They are also not allowed to imply this, and doing so makes the folks over at the FDA and FTC cranky.

I’ve been in this industry about 15 years now, and it saddens me to report that most pet food and supplement companies spend more money on marketing than they invest into research and safety. So when a “Best Dog Food for Allergies” or a “Best Overall” food you see on social media from a ‘news’ outlet I want you to think twice.

A company could NOT say this about their own product without triggering regulatory compliance violations. So, a loophole becomes getting that product positioned in a ‘best of’ list by a journalist, in one form or another.

A rep for a pet food company (that we don’t carry) recently and rather enthusiastically emailed me a recent Forbes article asserting that this particular brand was “Best Dog Food for Allergies Overall.” Now aside from the blatant loophole of avoiding making drug claims, they further stepped in it by saying ‘this type of third-party validation can be a powerful tool for your staff when helping customers find the right food for sensitive dogs.”

Screenshot of article published on June 12, 2026. Date retrieved July 21, 2026. https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbes-personal-shopper/article/best-dog-food-for-allergies/

Now, aside from the fact that my team or I would NEVER use a news article to help a customer pick a food, there is a lot to unpack in such a short email. It is my opinion that marketing this food as “best for allergies” even if the company did not make the claim themselves, borders on making a drug claim because they are implying that the food treats a disease (allergies). Not great. Also claiming that a newspaper article is ‘third-party validation’ is an extreme overreach. As a scientist third-party mean that the information is unbiased and scientific – and this article is neither considering the journalist is speaking from her personal experience with the food and her pet.

Inevitably I also got this forwarded to me by several friends and customers, with something to the effect of “is this legit?”. Fair question for the average pet owner. Infuriating question for someone like me, and the team at NPP.

What does the list mean?

For someone like me, I usually just roll past these headlines and roll my eyes. However, I think it’s a great example for me to highlight how these come to exist. If you scroll past the initial headline and hero imagery, Forbes tells you how they constructed this newest article. It’s a combination of staff picks, general vet commentary about limited-ingredient diets (which has no legal definition by the way), ingredient considerations, and customer feedback. As mentioned, the top pick leans on one writer feeding it to her own dog and having a great experience. I’m genuinely happy for her, however, if you know anything about me you’ll have heard me say what works for one dog will not always work for the next.

At the end of the day, this article is providing recommendations based on opinion and popularity. It’s not a scientific test. No lab work. There is no validation. No feeding trial on dogs with confirmed allergies. No laboratory tests that measure any health biomarkers. No head-to-head comparison against other foods on the market – or anything you could measure and repeat. And it certainly doesn’t tell you what worked for a dog like yours…that my friends is by design.

“Third-party validation” is a real thing. This isn’t it.

I already mentioned this, but it’s worth repeating. Validation has rules. The people validating in a situation like this should be independent from the brand. The method used should not only be written down, but transparently shared so someone else can repeat the workflow and see if they get the same results. Repeating the test, and getting the same (or highly similar) results would be true validation.

In other words, product vetting should be measured against a known and meaningful standard. Then, other experts should be double checking the work again before it’s published (this is called peer review).

So to be clear, a “best of” article clears none of that. Lifestyle writers from any media outlet, personal preferences, lists without standards, or those lacking outside review shouldn’t ever be a benchmark for picking a pets food, supplement (or yours for that matter).

Somebody gets paid, usually…

In most cases, but maybe not all, articles often earn the publisher a commission when you click and buy. The FTC regulates those links because they bend recommendations. No brand paid for the coverage, but this model still rewards big, easy-to-link brands, which describes every product on this particular list. In others, products may be part of ‘best of’ lists in one form or another in the form of what we like to call ‘Advertorials’. Advertorials are when brands pay journalists to write about their product in a positive light. These are really just long form ads made out to look like genuine journal articles, but are not. Take that for what you will.

For the record, we don’t take money from brands to write about products. We also don’t rank brands from this angle since there is no product that is best for every pet, and doing so would be disingenuous. We hold that line because the alternative is the exact thing this article is about.

Your dog’s allergies are a disease

Food reactions in dogs are a clinical condition, and the research on them is boring in the way good evidence usually is.

Among dogs seen by a vet for any reason, food-related skin reactions run about 1 to 2 percent. In other words: food allergies are RARE. The most common culprit are environmental allergens. Things like pollens, mites, fleas, and dander from other pets (it’s true – pets can even be allergic to human dander)!

Food can help dogs and cats that suffer from environmental allergies, however it’s not a magic bullet. These dogs usually require lifelong management, medicated shampoos, gut health consideration (probiotics, digestive enzymes), Omega 3’s (at the right dose), medicated baths (remove the allergens & kill yeast overgrowth), and a combination of prescription drugs in addition to special diet consideration. Allergic dermatitis is incredibly itchy, and can be painful when not well managed.

Most articles also ignore the fact that the only proven way to confirm a food allergy is an elimination diet. This means feeding one novel or hydrolyzed protein for eight to twelve weeks, then reintroduce the old food and watch for the signs to come back (Gaschen & Merchant, 2011). These can’t be determined or figured out by reading an ingredient panels. Even blood or saliva “allergy testing,” doesn’t reliably diagnose food allergies. And a lot of dogs that look like food-allergy dogs have environmental allergies instead. More common. Completely different plan.

How do you know if a food is good for allergies?

Peer-reviewed studies that run the elimination-then-rechallenge feeding protocol on defined groups of dogs would earn the right for a company to say their food is ‘good for allergies’. However, in today’s marketplace I don’t think that is even necessary. I would be happy with a company completing third party testing to ensure that their foods at least meet minimum nutrient requirements, are free of pathogens and contaminants and that they do not release their product into the marketplace until they receive that third party validation back… (see what I did there?) None of that built the Forbes list. That’s not a shot at the writer, it’s just the fact of the matter.

Dose of reality…

You don’t have to become a nutrition researcher to feed your dog well. That’s our job. Our team includes veterinary technicians with real clinical experience, and our guidance is grounded in research-level training and the actual studies, not the press release.

Food isn’t just food, it’s a tool you can use alongside many other tools. But it’s important to individualize the approach to the animal in front of you. Two dogs the same size (or even same litter) can need different things.

We’ve been asking the wrong questions about pet food. Ingredient lists dominate the conversation, but they don’t tell us how a food actually performs in the body. This article breaks down what really matters - digestibility, formulation, and measurable outcomes - and why the industry needs to rethink how we define “good” nutrition.

Ingredients matter. Quality matters. That’s not up for debate. But something has gone seriously off track in how we evaluate dog and cat food, and the people getting it wrong are often the ones who care the most.

When a formula changes, what’s the first question people ask?

Does it have fillers?

Are there by-products

What nobody asks:

What changed in the nutrient profile?

Did digestibility shift?

Are there any measurable differences in how dogs are actually doing on the food?

These questions are missing from every conversation. And that absence is doing real harm.

The List of Ingredients

When we’re talking about kibble or canned diets, we are talking about processed food. Some ingredients are processed multiple times. Processing, which includes grinding, cutting, drying, fractionating, heating, and pressure, changes the structure, digestibility, and nutrient availability of nutrients supplied by ingredients. Sometimes in a positive way, sometimes not. That is not opinion. That is established food science.

A kibble is not a list of raw ingredients. It is a formulated, processed diet designed to deliver nutrients in a specific way, and that process is complex and nearly impossible to genuinely simplify. Yet that is exactly what the industry keeps trying to do.

Two foods with similar ingredient lists can have markedly different nutrient profiles, digestibility, and biological outcomes depending on formulation, processing, and nutrient balancing. Conversely, foods with very different ingredient lists can deliver nearly identical nutritional profiles. What complicates this further, is the bioavailability of the nutrients supplied by these foods, or in other words if the pet can use those nutrients or not. This is why companion animal nutrition evaluates diets on nutrient composition and performance, not ingredient appearance alone. When we reduce evaluation to labels, we ignore the actual formulation work that determines how a diet functions in the animal.

“Filler” Is a Marketing Term. Not a Scientific One.

“Filler” and “by-product” are not scientific or regulatory classifications. They have no legal definitions. They are marketing terms, and they have been so thoroughly adopted by the independent retail channel that we now deploy them as if they constitute clinical evidence of poor nutrition. They do not.

Ingredients like starches and fibers that get reflexively dismissed as “fillers” are frequently included for defined functional reasons: stool quality, fermentation, energy delivery, and overall gastrointestinal function. In plain language, they help deliver nutrients the body needs, and without them there are health consequences. That doesn’t automatically make them ideal in every context, but it also doesn’t make them meaningless, inherently low quality, or a filler.

Take beet pulp for example. It is a moderately fermentable fiber used because it reliably supports stool consistency and colonic health. It is well-studied. It has a defined, functional role in processed pet food. The same fiber category shows up in boutique kibbles and raw toppers under names like chicory root, inulin, and pumpkin, where it gets called a prebiotic or a digestive support ingredient. The ingredient optics are just different. Is it the first ingredient I’d reach for when building a species-appropriate fresh food diet from scratch? No. But calling it a filler is not just imprecise. It is wrong. And communicating ingredients like this to pet parents as nutritional evidence of a food’s decline is a problem.

Ingredient lists also do not reflect dose, proportion, or functional contribution. An ingredient included at a physiologically meaningful level is very different from one included for label appeal, yet both appear identically on a panel. Without understanding inclusion rates and functional intent, it is not possible to determine the role an ingredient is playing in the diet. This is a fundamental limitation of label-based evaluation that is never acknowledged.

Facts About Formulation

One of the most overlooked aspects in pet nutrition is that diets are not simply collections of ingredients, but instead formulated systems. Formulation becomes more important as ingredient complexity increases. For example, whole food inclusions can introduce variability in nutrient composition, bioavailability, and balance, particularly after processing. Without careful formulation and post-processing validation, diets can miss targets for essential nutrients despite appearing high quality on paper.

This is well recognized in both human and veterinary nutrition, where nutrient adequacy, not ingredient identity, is the standard for evaluating a diet. If these outcomes are not being considered, the evaluation is incomplete regardless of how the ingredient list reads.

Ask ‘Un-spin-able’ Questions

If a food has genuinely declined in quality, that is a serious claim. It should be supported by something measurable:

Changes in nutrient adequacy

Shifts in digestibility

Safety concerns backed by data

Clinical outcomes

Without that, what we have is a store philosophy being communicated as nutritional evidence. Those are not the same thing. Conflating them is where this industry keeps losing the credibility it needs with the veterinarians and scientists who should be its allies.

Digestibility: The Forgotten Variable

Not all nutrients that are listed are utilized. Digestibility determines how much of a nutrient is absorbed and available to the animal, and this can vary significantly between ingredients and processing methods.

A diet with a cleaner ingredient list but lower digestibility may deliver fewer usable amino acids or available energy than a more processed diet with an optimized formulation. In clinical settings, highly digestible diets are often prioritized for gastrointestinal disease, recovery, and performance, not because of how the ingredient list reads, but because of how efficiently the animal can use the nutrients provided.

Without considering digestibility, ingredient-based judgments are incomplete.

The Questions We Should Ask

If we are genuinely concerned about the long-term health impact of processed diets, and there are real reasons to be, there are far more scientifically meaningful questions to be asking than whether an ingredient is labeled a by-product.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs). These compounds form during high-heat processing, including the extrusion process used to produce kibble. Extrusion exposes ingredients to high temperature and pressure, conditions known to drive Maillard reactions and the formation of these compounds. In human nutrition, AGEs have been associated with inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. In dogs, emerging work is beginning to explore similar pathways. Yet these factors are rarely part of how foods are evaluated at the consumer level, despite being a direct consequence of processing itself.

Acrylamide. Also formed during high-heat processing, and with established health risks in human nutrition. Likewise, these are rarely discussed in the pet food retail context.

Antinutritional factors. Ingredients perceived as clean or whole are not inherently superior if they are not processed appropriately. Legumes and certain grains can contain compounds such as phytates, lectins, and protease inhibitors, which can interfere with mineral absorption and protein digestion if not addressed. In human nutrition, these are well-characterized concerns mitigated through soaking, fermenting, or cooking. In pet food, extrusion reduces some of these compounds, but not always uniformly. This raises a more meaningful question than what is on the label: how were these ingredients processed, and did that processing optimize or limit nutrient availability?

These are the questions that would move the needle on long-term pet health outcomes. They are also the questions almost entirely absent from the conversation at the consumer level, the retail level, and in a lot of influencer-driven content that passes itself off as ‘nutrition education’.

The Uncomfortable Reality for the Fresh Food Camp

I am in the fresh food camp. But there is a persistent assumption in this space that whole food or minimally processed ingredients inherently lead to better nutrition, and that assumption warrants more examination than it recieves.

We’ve swung from one extreme to another. For years, the mainstream commercial pet food establishment dismissed ingredient quality entirely. The backlash was warranted. Ingredients do matter. But we overcorrected. We started treating the ingredient list as the whole story, layered marketing language on top of it, and then communicated that to pet parents as if it were grounded in nutrition science. We built a framework where whole food automatically means better and by-product automatically means bad, without any serious consideration of food science, processing effects, formulation complexity, or measurable outcomes.

And then we used that framework to tell people their pets’ food was no longer good.

Flattening that distinction with the word “filler” doesn’t protect pets. It creates confusion, erodes trust, and generates an enormous amount of unnecessary churn for pet parents who are genuinely trying to do right by their animals.

Imagine If We Asked Different Questions?

Focusing on ingredient perception ignores one of the most practical and measurable indicators of diet quality: how the animal performs on the food. Stool quality, body condition, coat quality, and gastrointestinal tolerance are not subjective preferences. These are reflections of how well a diet is being digested and utilized.

Dogs and cats don’t respond to ingredient stories and philosophies. They respond to what the diet does in the body and how processing affects that. In clinical and research settings, outcome variables like digestibility, tolerance, metabolic response, and long-term health markers are the standard for evaluating diet performance. If a diet supports stable body condition, consistent stool quality, and overall health, that reflects functional adequacy regardless of whether the ingredient list aligns with a particular narrative.

Without incorporating outcomes, diet evaluation remains theoretical rather than physiological.

My View:

I am not a champion of ultra-processed food. The evidence for minimally processed and fresh diets, when properly formulated, is compelling and growing. I think we should be moving pet parents in that direction when we can and meeting them where they are when we can’t.

But I am not going to tell a pet parent their dog’s food is no longer good without evidence. I am not going to call beet pulp a filler because it makes for a cleaner story. And I am not going to let this industry keep making pet parents feel guilty or confused about feeding their dogs a properly formulated, nutrient-adequate processed diet because we decided that an ingredient list is more important than actual nutritional outcomes.

None of this is an argument against caring about ingredients. It is an argument for using them correctly. Ingredients are part of the picture. But in processed diets, they are not the whole picture, and in many cases, they are not the most informative part.

The question has to shift from what’s in the food? to what does the food do? Until it does, we will keep generating confusion, eroding trust, and sending pet parents on an endless loop of switching foods based on rhetoric instead of evidence.

That is not advocacy. That is the opposite of it.

Our Decision

We have made the decision to discontinue the sale of raw milk products at NorthPoint Pets. This wasn’t a choice we made lightly, but one that emerged from our ongoing commitment to pet safety and our deep understanding of current industry practices.

Why This Change?

The pet raw milk industry operates in a regulatory gray area that many pet parents might not be aware of. Unlike human-grade dairy products, which must meet strict federal and state safety standards, pet milk products exist in a space with minimal oversight and inconsistent testing requirements. This means that while many producers may follow good practices, there’s no standardized system to verify safety across the industry.

When we first began offering raw milk products, we believed in their potential benefits while trusting in available safety measures. However, recent developments, including the emergence of H5N1 avian influenza and its potential transmission through unpasteurized dairy products, have highlighted concerning gaps in the industry’s safety protocols.

The Testing Gap

One of the most significant issues we’ve identified is the lack of comprehensive testing standards. While human dairy undergoes rigorous testing for various pathogens, including emerging threats like H5N1, pet raw milk products often lack similar scrutiny. Current testing, when performed, typically focuses on common bacterial contaminants but may miss emerging viral threats that could affect our pets’ health.

Consider this: When a new pathogen emerges, human food supply chains quickly adapt their testing protocols to ensure consumer safety. However, in the pet raw milk industry, no such standardized response system exists. This means that even conscientious producers may lack the tools and protocols needed to screen for new threats effectively.

Why Now?

The recent spread of H5N1 avian influenza, particularly its ability to affect mammals, has brought these industry shortcomings into sharp focus. We’ve observed that:

There’s no standardized testing protocol for H5N1 in pet raw milk products

The current regulatory framework doesn’t require producers to adapt testing for emerging threats

Scientific understanding of how H5N1 might spread through dairy products is still evolving

The potential risks, especially to cats who are particularly susceptible to H5N1, are severe

Our Commitment to Your Pets’ Health

This decision reflects our unwavering commitment to your pets’ wellbeing. While we have always supported natural feeding options and continue to do so, we believe that when safety concerns arise, we must act decisively. Our role as your trusted pet health partner demands nothing less.

Moving Forward

We understand this change may affect your pet’s routine, and we’re here to help. Our knowledgeable team is prepared to discuss alternative products that can provide similar nutritional benefits while maintaining the highest safety standards. We’re also committed to staying informed about industry developments and will continue to evaluate our policies as safety standards evolve.

A Call for Industry Change

While we’ve made this decision for our store, we believe this situation highlights the need for broader industry reform. We support efforts to establish more rigorous testing standards and oversight in the pet raw milk industry. Until such changes occur, we’ll continue to make decisions that prioritize your pets’ safety above all else.

We appreciate your trust in NorthPoint Pets and your understanding as we make this important change. If you have any questions about this decision or would like to discuss alternative options for your pet, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team.

Your pet’s health and safety remain our highest priority, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue serving as your partner in pet wellness.

Pet obesity is a growing concern, with up to 65% of dogs in the United States considered overweight or obese (Grota, 2022). The situation is similar in cats, with approximately 50% of cats seen at veterinary clinics being overweight or obese (McDaniel, n.d.). While overfeeding and inadequate exercise are common causes of obesity, traditional diets may not always work for every pet. This article explores why this is the case and discusses the importance of diets designed with differing macronutrients and micronutrients.

Why Traditional Diets May Not Always Work

Traditional pet diets often focus on providing a balanced diet with all the necessary nutrients. However, these diets may not consider the individual needs of each pet. For instance, some pets may have medical conditions like hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease that cause obesity (Grota, 2022). Additionally, certain breeds like Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are predisposed to obesity (Grota, 2022).

Moreover, the practice of “free feeding,” where a bowl of dry food is available for consumption by a pet throughout the day, can contribute to obesity. This is because it allows the pet to consume excessive amounts of food that is constantly available (McDaniel, n.d.).

The Importance of Macronutrients and Micronutrients

Designing a diet with differing macronutrients and micronutrients can help address the issue of pet obesity. Macronutrients, including proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, provide energy and are required in large amounts. Micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, are needed in smaller quantities but are essential for various bodily functions.

Understanding Calories and Their Sources

Calories come from 3 places: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. While fat is the most calorically dense macronutrient, high-fat diets don’t necessarily result in more body fat – metabolism is a lot more complex than that. However, a diet that is predominately carbohydrates can and often does result in greater body fat, and increasing body weight over time.

For instance, a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates can be beneficial for cats and dogs struggling with weight. While this may not mean ditching kibble completely, it can mean adding in fresh foods (cooked or raw), canned food and even freeze-dried options to help reduce the overall carbohydrate content.

The Problem With Feeding the Same Thing Every Day

Feeding pets the same food every day can lead to a lack of variety in their diet, which may not only contribute to obesity but also to finicky eating habits. According to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, many pets are content to eat a single food, but some may develop selective eating habits and become very selective about what foods they’ll accept. Feeding your cat two or three different foods provides flavor variety and may prevent your pet from developing an exclusive preference for a single food (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, n.d.).

The Benefits of Variety in Proteins, Food Types, and Fresh Foods

Incorporating a variety of proteins, food types (like canned, dry, freeze-dried, cooked or raw), and fresh foods like fruits and vegetables can help combat pet obesity. Different proteins provide different profiles of essential amino acids, and rotating them can ensure a more balanced intake.

Understanding Calorie Content in Pet Food Varieties

Commercial pet foods are formulated as dry, canned, raw, cooked, freeze dried – each with its own advantages. They also have vastly different macronutrient (protein, fat and carbohydrate) composition, and thus very different caloric density. This means that one cup of dry pet food has a very different calorie content than one cup of freeze dried foods. Utilizing different types of foods requires careful planning and measuring to ensure your pet consumes the right calories and nutrients for their age, weight and lifestyle.

The Role of Fresh Foods in Reducing Obesity

Adding fresh foods like fruits and vegetables can provide additional nutrients and fiber, and protect against some of the risks of processed foods (like canned and dry foods). They also help pets feel fuller without adding a lot of calories. However, it’s important to note that not all fruits and vegetables are safe, and adding too much can cause the diet to become unbalanced. It’s important to obtain some help when getting started. Our team is ready and more than happy to help ensure it’s easy and not overwhelming.

How the Processing of Kibble and Canned Food Contributes to Obesity

In recent years scientists have learned that the processing of pet food has unintended consequences. Advanced Glycation End Products, commonly known as AGEs, are compounds that are formed when proteins or fats combine with sugars in the bloodstream. This process is known as glycation. AGEs can also be found in foods, especially those that are high in fat and protein, and their levels increase when food is cooked at high temperatures, such as during frying or grilling for humans – or the processes used to make kibble and canned food in pets

How AGEs Contribute to Pet Obesity

AGEs are of particular interest in medicine at the moment because they can contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. Inflammation is the body’s response to injury or illness, but when it becomes chronic, it can lead to various health problems. Oxidative stress, on the other hand, occurs when there’s an imbalance between the production of free radicals, which are harmful molecules, and the body’s ability to counteract their harmful effects.

Link Between Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Obesity

Both inflammation and oxidative stress are associated with obesity, a condition characterized by excessive body fat. Obesity is a major risk factor for several chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. Research shows that our pets consume 122 times the amount of AGEs that humans do (van Rooijen, 2014) – and the 2 main reasons is they eat predominately kibble or canned food AND they don’t often consume fresh fruits and vegetables which combat the harmful effects of AGEs.

Reducing AGEs in Your Pet’s Diet

The good news is that the amount of AGEs in our pets diets can be reduced. Cooking methods that use moist heat, shorter cooking times, and lower temperatures can help minimize the formation of AGEs. This means incorporating, fresh, gently cooked and raw options into our pets bowls can have a significant benefit. In fact, research from the University of Helsinki and Instinct Pet Food has shown adding just 20% fresh food to a bowl of processed pet foods has a dramatic effect on reducing inflammation within our pets bodies!

Therefore, by understanding the role of AGEs and making conscious dietary choices, we can potentially reduce our risk of obesity and its associated health problems.

It’s Not One Size Fits All!

While traditional diets can provide a balanced diet for pets, they may not always work for every pet, especially those prone to obesity. It’s important to consider the individual needs of each pet, including their breed, age, and any existing medical conditions. Diets designed with differing macronutrients and micronutrients can help address these individual needs and combat pet obesity.

It’s tempting to judge dog food by its cost per pound, but this strategy can be misleading. Let’s explore why cost per pound isn’t the most effective way to determine the value of your dog’s food and how you can make better choices for their health and your wallet.

The Hidden Costs of Low Price Per Pound

Nutritional Density Matters

It’s crucial to understand that not all dog foods are created equal. Foods with a lower cost per pound often have ingredients that provide fewer nutrients per serving. This means you might end up feeding your dog more to meet their nutritional needs, leading to higher overall costs.

Additionally, pet food labels do not provide information about the food’s digestibility. This is why we require our brands to conduct third-party digestibility testing on all their finished formulas. Some brands rely solely on the digestibility of individual ingredients. However, these individual values do not account for processing losses, ingredient interactions, or the impact of fiber on nutrient bioavailability. Full digestibility trials for each formula provide a more accurate assessment.

Caloric Content

Higher-quality dog foods typically have a higher caloric density, meaning each cup of food contains more calories. This allows you to feed your dog less while still providing them with the energy they need. Cheaper foods often have lower caloric content, requiring larger portions and increasing the cost per serving.

Furthermore, the higher price tag often reflects the extensive testing that pet food undergoes before reaching our shelves. This includes formulation by a board-certified nutritionist, pathogen testing, and comprehensive nutrient analysis just to name a few. These measures ensure that pet food brands deliver products you can trust for their quality and safety. (Spoiler Alert: You’d be amazed how many brands do NOT conduct these tests!)

Long-Term Health Benefits

Investing in high-quality dog food can save you money in the long run by promoting better health and potentially reducing vet bills. Foods made with premium ingredients, including minimally-processed animal-sourced proteins, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, and natural additives, often provide better nutrition. This can contribute to a lower risk of developing health issues such as obesity, allergies, and digestive problems, which can be more prevalent with lower-cost foods that may contain vague ultra-processed ingredients and less digestible proteins.

A Better Way to Evaluate Dog Food Costs

Cost Per Serving

Calculate the cost per serving or per day based on your dog’s caloric needs. Remember, feeding recommendations are based on moderate daily activity, which often exceeds the exercise most pets actually get. It’s important to consider your dog’s age, weight, daily activity level, breed, gender, and neuter status to accurately assess their caloric needs. This provides a clearer picture of the true cost of feeding your dog and allows for a more effective comparison between different brands.

Ingredient Quality

Look beyond the price tag and consider the ingredient list. High-quality proteins, fruits, vegetables, and lesser processed ingredients generally provide higher quality nutrition and are often more digestible, leading to better overall health for your dog.

Another factor to consider is the quality, sourcing, and processing of your pet food ingredients. For example, protein products such as meat meals and carbohydrates like grains and potatoes often undergo significant processing before being combined with other ingredients. When these processed ingredients are included in the food formula, they are subjected to high-temperature processing multiple times, which can increase the formation of cooking toxins known as advanced glycation end-products (known as AGEs) and raises the risk of potential health issues.

Making Informed Choices for Your Dog

A myriad of factors can make choosing a pet food challenging. However, we encourage you to consider the long-term benefits of a pet food that has been tested for nutritional adequacy, has reputable ingredient sourcing, and contains quality, minimally-processed ingredients. The upfront cost may be higher, but the investment pays off in the form of a healthier, happier pet and fewer trips to the vet.

At NorthPoint Pets & Company, we are dedicated to transforming pet health through science-based nutrition and personalized care. We aim to educate pet parents on crucial aspects of pet nutrition that are often overlooked or misunderstood. One significant issue is the dog feeding guidelines provided by pet food companies, which can lead to overfeeding and associated health problems.

Why Feeding Recommendations Can Be Misleading

Most pet food feeding guidelines are based on the needs of moderately active dogs. However, these recommendations don’t account for the fact that many pets today lead very sedentary lifestyles. Our dogs often get just 20 minutes in the yard or a short walk each day. Additionally, many dog owners unintentionally mismeasure their pet’s food with incorrect measuring utensils or by overlooking differences in calorie density when switching foods. This can further complicate ensuring your dog receives the appropriate amount of nutrients and calories for their activity level. These disparities can lead to overfeeding, resulting in weight gain, obesity, and related health issues like joint disease and accelerated aging.

Understanding Activity Levels: Low, Medium, and High

Veterinary nutritionists classify dogs into three activity levels when calculating their caloric needs:

Activity Level

Description

Miles per Day

Moderate Activity Time

Intense Activity Time

Caloric Needs

Low Activity

Dogs that spend most of their time indoors with limited physical exercise. They might only have short walks or play sessions.

Less than 2 miles

Less than 30 minutes

Less than 10 minutes

Lower caloric needs to maintain a healthy weight.

Medium Activity

Moderately active dogs with regular daily walks, some playtime, and occasional runs or hikes.

2-3 miles

30-60 minutes

10-20 minutes

Balanced caloric needs reflecting moderate energy expenditure.

High Activity

Highly active dogs involved in strenuous activities like long-distance running, agility training, or working dogs with demanding physical tasks.

More than 3 miles

More than 60 minutes

More than 20 minutes

Significantly higher caloric intake to support high energy requirements.

Based on this information, the majority of dogs fall in the low activity category. The average dog gets a brief walk in the morning, another walk when owners arrive home from work, and maybe a short play session in the yard. The majority of their day is spent sleeping or lounging. Unless the dog is walking an average of 2-3 miles a day, it generally falls in the low activity range.

With that said, very few dogs fall into the moderate or “active” category. Even if your dog gets exercise 2-3 times a week, they can still fall in the “low activity” range.

The Emotional Impact of Overfeeding

We know it can be tough to hear that our pets might be overweight or that we’re overfeeding them. After all, we show our love through treats and meals. But, just like in humans, maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for their well-being. Think of it this way: by feeding them the right amount, you’re ensuring they live a longer, healthier, and happier life.

A Gentle Approach to Healthy Change

We understand that increasing your pet’s activity might not always be feasible due to time constraints. However, there are simple, effective changes you can make to improve your pet’s health:

Tailored Feeding Plans: Consider adjusting the portion sizes based on your pet’s activity level. We can help you calculate the right amount of food for your pet’s specific needs.

Healthy Treats: Opt for low-calorie nutritious treats and use them sparingly. Fresh fruit and vegetables can replace high calorie processed biscuits. Treats should complement your pet’s diet, not comprise a significant portion of their daily intake.

Regular Monitoring: Keep an eye on your pet’s weight and body condition. Stop in anytime to use our dog scale. While you’re here, talk to one of our friendly team members to discuss your pet’s nutrition plan.

Enrichment Activities: While increasing physical activity might be challenging, mental stimulation is equally important. Puzzle toys, interactive games, and training sessions can keep your pet engaged and active.

Tailored Nutrition for Your Dog

At NorthPoint Pets & Company, we’re committed to supporting you every step of the way. We offer a broad selection of pet foods and essential supplements, backed by research and tailored to various needs and budgets.
Remember, small changes can make a big difference in your pet’s health. By adjusting their diet and incorporating enriching activities, you can help your pet lead a happier, healthier life.

Why It’s Never Too Late to Improve Your Senior Dog’s Diet

Senior dog owners often dismiss the idea of raw feeding because the animal is ‘too old.’ While nutrition is never one-size-fits-all, it’s also never “too late” to switch foods or supplement with fresh food. If your dog has reached their golden years, improving your senior dog’s diet can be one of the most powerful changes you can make to maximize their health span.

Common Misconceptions Surrounding Raw Food for Senior Pets:

Misconception #1: A raw diet is too high in protein and/or fat for a senior dog.

This idea comes from the notion that raw meat is exceptionally high in protein and fat content, and that a senior dog’s liver and kidneys cannot process too much of these.

The first misnomer here is that protein and fat are harmful to a senior dog’s diet. It’s important to note that protein and fat are actually the most easily digested macronutrients available to the body so long as they are in a minimally processed form. So while it is safe to assume that raw diets offer higher fat and protein than a kibble or canned diet, quality animal-based sources can offer greater digestibility and bioavailability (nutrient absorption) than any cooked, ultra-processed food options.

The second misnomer is that raw fat and protein put extra stress on the organs – the liver and kidney specifically. Instead, it’s important to understand that the body has to work harder to break down fat and protein that have been processed, or heated multiple times to make kibble or canned food. Furthermore, kibble diets in particular tend to be very high in carbohydrates. In other words, the body works much harder to digest a food that is highly processed than one that is minimally processed.

The last (and likely the most important) misnomer is that high protein is bad for the kidneys. This is false, and instead it is high phosphorus that can be damaging for stressed kidneys. This is why it is so important for pet food companies to analyze their final product to ensure that nutrients – such as phosphorus – are not too high!

Learn more about nutrient value in your pet’s food here.

Misconception #2: Changing your pet’s diet in old age won’t make a difference.

Diet and nutrition play a vital role in your pet’s health span, regardless of age. New research even shows that the food fed to a puppy can greatly impact the dog’s life in later years. Likewise, what you feed your senior pet can impact their quality of life, often delaying or minimizing age-related changes in mobility, digestive and immune health, and cognitive wellbeing. At NPP, some of the best, most miraculous success stories we hear come from customers who have improved their senior dog’s diet!

Misconception #3: An entire diet overhaul is required to have any noticeable effect on health.

A recent study from the University of Helsinki found that when dogs fed a kibble diet had just 20% of their kibble replaced with fresh, minimally processed food, occurrences of atopic dermatitis (environmental skin allergies) and inflammatory bowel disease significantly decreased. This observation was linked by the body’s methylation process – how efficiently it removes toxins from the body.

The truth is that subtle changes to a senior dog’s diet – like increasing moisture with bone broth, supplementing with antioxidant-rich produce, or replacing 20% of a kibble diet with fresh food – can yield noticeable differences in joint mobility, skin and coat health, gut flora, and even cognitive function at any age.

That’s why we have compiled a series of common concerns and their answers about switching to a fresh or raw food diet. To address some of the most frequently raised topics, we hope this information will help you navigate the transition to a fresh food diet with confidence

Concern: My Pet Isn’t Drinking Water After Switching to a Fresh Diet

Fresh food diets, such as raw or gently cooked meals, have a high moisture content, unlike dry kibble diets which typically contain less than 10% moisture. Dry kibble often leaves pets sub-clinically dehydrated, leading them to seek out additional water. However, fresh food diets provide ample moisture directly from the food, which is an excellent source of hydration. So, if your pet is drinking less water after switching to a fresh diet, it’s completely normal and indicates that they are likely well-hydrated.

Regardless of this decreased thirst, always offer plenty of fresh, clean water daily. You can also increase hydration by adding bone broth or raw goat milk to your pet’s meals. Signs of dehydration include lethargy, loss of appetite, excessive panting, dry and/or pale nose, and gums. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.

Concern: Changes in Bowel Movements After Switching to a Fresh Diet

It’s quite common for pets to experience changes in their bowel movements when transitioning to a fresh food diet. One noticeable change is that they may poop less often or have smaller stools. This is entirely expected and can be attributed to the improved digestibility and nutrient utilization of fresh food.

Unlike many commercial diets that contain ingredients the body struggles to process, fresh food diets provide highly concentrated and easily digestible components. These nutrients are efficiently broken down and utilized by the body, resulting in minimal waste at the end of the digestive process. Consequently, pets on fresh food diets may have fewer and smaller stools since their bodies are extracting more value from the food they consume.

While the change in bowel movements may initially seem unusual, it’s actually a positive sign that your pet is efficiently utilizing the nutrients from their diet. As long as your pet doesn’t exhibit signs of discomfort or other health concerns, the adjustment in their bowel movements is generally considered normal and reflects the improved nutritional quality of their fresh food diet. Regardless, it’s important to continue observing your pet’s bathroom habits to monitor their overall health.

Concern: Changes in Stool Consistency, Color, and Texture on a Fresh Diet

It’s perfectly normal for pets to experience changes in the consistency, color, and texture of their poop when transitioning to a fresh food diet. These changes can be attributed to several factors, similar to the ones mentioned earlier.

Firstly, minimally processed diets often have higher digestibility and bioavailability, resulting in better nutrient absorption. As a result, you may notice that your pet’s poop becomes harder, smaller, or drier in texture. Some pet owners even describe it as “powdery.” This can be particularly noticeable when the diet includes increased bone content, which provides calcium and phosphorus. A diet rich in fiber can also contribute to firmer stools.

In terms of color, you might observe that your pet’s poop becomes darker, almost black, or even lighter in color. Darker stools can be a result of the increased organ meat in the diet, which is high in iron. Similarly, lighter stools may indicate a higher proportion of nutrients such as calcium from ground bone.

Furthermore, the reduced volume of waste in the stools is a result of the body effectively utilizing the nutrients from the fresh food diet. If these stools are left out on the lawn and not picked up, they may disintegrate or dissolve into the ground more quickly than other types of stool due to their decreased feed content.

It’s essential to remember that these changes in poop consistency, color, and texture are generally considered normal and indicate that your pet’s body is efficiently processing and benefiting from the nutrients in their fresh food diet. However, if you notice any other concerning symptoms or if the changes persist for an extended period, consult with your veterinarian for further guidance.

Concern: Changes in Pet’s Energy, Behavior, and Calmness on a Fresh Diet

It’s not uncommon for pets to experience changes in their energy levels, behavior, and overall calmness when switched to a fresh food diet. Many pet owners report that their pets exhibit a more consistent level of energy throughout the day after transitioning to a raw or fresh diet. They often notice increased calmness, improved focus, and better training performance. Senior pets may also experience increased energy. These changes can be attributed to the significant impact of a minimally processed diet on the gut microbiome as well as rich amino acid profiles.

A fresh food diet, rich in whole and minimally processed ingredients, supports a healthy and balanced gut microbiome. Your pet’s gut microbiome is home to trillions of beneficial bacteria that influence various aspects of health, including mental well-being. When the gut microbiome is balanced with diverse bacterial communities, it positively affects neurotransmitter production and regulation, leading to enhanced mental stability and a balanced demeanor in pets.²

Furthermore, minimally processed diets provide an excellent source of amino acids–the building blocks of proteins. Amino acids like tryptophan and tyrosine act as precursors to neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, and adrenaline.² These neurotransmitters help to regulate the body’s mood and behavior by promoting relaxation. In dogs and cats, this can often mean less fear and anxiety during stressful situations, reduced hyperactivity, and a generally calmer demeanor.

This positive shift in energy, behavior, and mental well-being can be attributed to the nourishing properties of a fresh food diet. Minimal processing allows for optimal nutrient absorption, ensuring that your pet receives the necessary building blocks for a healthy body and mind.

Concern: Weight Change on a Fresh Diet

Minor weight loss is a common occurrence when pets transition from a kibble to fresh food, and it is usually not a cause for concern. However, it is important to monitor your pet closely to determine if adjustments to feeding measurements are necessary.

During the initial period of adjusting to a raw diet, it is normal to observe a slight decrease in body weight. This can be attributed to the lower carbohydrate content in fresh food diets compared to kibble. In addition, studies show that ultra-processed diets increase the body’s production of AGE’s, which cause inflammation.6

Therefore, decreased weight is often a positive sign that the body is reducing inflammation and undergoing effective detoxification.

Additionally, fresh food diets provide the necessary nutrients for healthy energy, leading to enhanced muscle definition in pets. We generally observe a short period of slight weight loss, followed by a plateau with no changes, and then a slight increase in body weight that your pet maintains long term.

Conversely, some pets who have difficulty maintaining a healthy weight due to malabsorption may have success putting on extra pounds with a fresh diet. This is because minimally processed diets are often easier for some pets to digest and metabolize. This improved digestion and nutrient absorption can support the body in maintaining a healthy level of body fat and muscle, potentially aiding in weight gain for those pets in need.

It’s important to maintain a healthy body weight for your pet, so it’s vital to be attentive to their weight. However, a small degree of weight change is typically expected when switching to a fresh food diet. Always prioritize the maintenance of healthy body weight for your pet, and if you have concerns about their weight loss or overall health, check in with our team for personalized guidance.

Conclusion

We pride ourselves on listening to your concerns and providing as much information as we can to assist in your pet’s overall health and wellness. However, diet and nutrition are not “one size fits all”, and no single diet is best for all pets. We encourage you to consult with our team and your veterinarian to tailor a diet that suits your pet’s specific needs, taking into consideration their age, breed, health conditions, and personal preferences.

1. Improved Hydration

Glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid are nutrients packed into bone broth to help promote collagen growth.

Bone broth is a great way to add additional hydration to your pet’s diet. You can easily add this to their food as a topper. Feeding dry kibble without added moisture can often lead to chronic dehydration as the body pulls moisture from surrounding organs to break down the food. If you feed kibble (dry food), this can significantly help keep them stay hydrated, ease digestion, and maximize nutrient absorption.

2. Joint Health

Glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid are nutrients packed into bone broth to help promote collagen growth. Collagen is essential because it cushions the bones, ligaments, and tendons, which means it is crucial for joint health. Just like in humans, collagen naturally deteriorates as your pet ages. Without it, the bones have nothing between them to ease movement, leading to pain and limited mobility. Therefore, adding bone broth to the bowl diet is an easy way to keep joints healthy.

3. Liver Detox

Glycine, a vital amino acid, aids the liver in filtering toxins from your dog’s body. Bone broth’s high glycine levels support the liver’s most important function of filtering toxins from your dog’s body to detoxify its system.

4. Healthy Skin and Coat

A healthy coat and skin are essential components of overall health. Vitamins B and C promote collagen formation and cell proliferation, yielding a thick healthy coat. In addition to a healthier, softer coat, this can also help to alleviate common problems with dry, itchy skin and excessive shedding.

5. Better Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

Bone broth promotes overall gut health from glycine which helps to repair the intestinal wall and seal the gut lining. You may have heard of ‘leaky gut’, a condition in which undigested food particles can escape through an unhealthy gut – leading to a myriad of symptoms. Bone broth helps to seal this lining to prevent poor digestion. A healthy gut means better nutrient absorption, a more robust gut microbiome, and a stronger immune system.

Try serving your pet bone broth one of these ways:

Serve as a food topper over any type of food

Give to your pet as a stand alone treat

Freeze bone broth in a lick mat or puzzle toy for a longer-lasting treat

FAQ: Is Bone Broth the same as soup broth or stock?

In short, no. Avoid feeding your dog the broth you find on the shelves of the grocery store. Typically, the soup broth or stock we use in our own cooking is loaded with excess sodium, added flavors and ingredients that aren’t great for our pets. Instead, you can make your own bone broth at home or buy broth specifically made for pets.

Choosing a diet for your pets is no small decision, especially when considering raw, minimally processed (MP) diets. Due to their perceived health benefits, these diets are becoming increasingly popular. However, there is also concern about the potential transmission of foodborne pathogens. A recent study led by NorthPoint’s founder, Nicole Cammack, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine, provides valuable insights for any pet owner considering or currently feeding their pets a raw diet.

Research Overview

Nicole’s study surveyed 5,611 households across 62 countries to assess the frequency of pathogen transmission from raw diets to humans. The objective of this extensive survey was to gather owner-reported data on whether individuals in their households had contracted illnesses that could be linked back to the raw diets fed to their pets.

Findings

Of the households that fed raw-only diets to their dogs and/or cats, 77.1% reported no confirmed cases of pathogen transmission or infection by laboratory testing.

Eleven households (0.20%) were classified as having experienced “probable” transmission, and 20 households (0.36%) were classified as having experienced “possible” transmission.

The remainder of households (99.45%) were not considered to have experienced potential transmission of foodborne pathogens.

The most frequently reported pathogens were Salmonella (0.2%), Campylobacter (0.1%), and Escherichia coli (0.1%), all of which are known to pose health risks in both raw and cooked meats.

The most commonly fed proteins were beef and chicken. However, these meats were not associated with pathogen transmission. Protein sources used by households with decreased pathogen transmission risk included pork, turkey, duck, rabbit, and salmon.

Why This Research Matters to Pet Owners

The findings of this study are critical for pet owners for several reasons:

Low transmission rates: The research revealed that the actual owner-reported transmission of pathogens is exceedingly rare, with only 0.55% of the surveyed households reporting possible or probable transmission cases. This low percentage suggests that while the risk exists, it may not be as prevalent as some fear as long as proper safety measures are in place.

Impact of hygiene practices: The study emphasized the importance of basic hygiene and proper food handling. Households that used separate utensils and preparation areas for pet foods reported fewer transmission cases.

Dietary diversity: Households that included a broader variety of proteins in their pets’ diets experienced fewer pathogen transmission issues. This suggests that diversity in diet not only can contribute to nutritional balance but also potentially mitigate the risks associated with pathogens.

Practical Advice for Dog Owners

If you’re currently feeding or considering an MP-based diet for your pet, Nicci’s research confirms three basic precepts:

Follow strict hygiene practices: Contrary to common belief, the study found that households that prepared their pets’ food in the same place with the same utensils (for instance, the kitchen) had fewer reports of pathogen or suspected pathogen transmission compared to those who prepared their pets’ food in a separate location (e.g., garage). This is likely because people maintain consistent hygiene standards in their kitchen, ensuring thorough cleaning, unlike when food is prepared in a separate location with different utensils.

Always wash your pet’s food bowls after eating, as well as any surfaces and utensils that have come into contact with food. Cleaning and sanitation practices for pet food should be the same as you would use for handling raw meat when cooking for yourself.

Increase diet variety: Incorporating a variety of protein sources can help reduce the risk of pathogen transmission and enhance the overall health benefits to your pet.

Educate yourself and your family members: Understanding and implementing basic food safety practices is crucial. Wash utensils, bowls, and kitchen surfaces before and after using them. Also, wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds before and after handling any food. These are great practices to teach any children handling pet food, regardless of type (kibble, canned, freeze-dried, cooked, or raw), as all pet food types carry the risk of pathogens!

The Importance of Safety Practices in Raw Diets

According to this study, raw diets are relatively safe when handled correctly, emphasizing the importance of safety training and practices. By following the recommended safety measures, pet owners can significantly reduce the risk of transmitting pathogens to their pets.
