That flashy new formula with selenium yeast and Icelandic algae? It’s not solving a real health problem—it’s solving a marketing problem.

At NorthPoint Pets, we cut through trend-chasing tactics to help you choose based on science, not hype.

Why Brands Keep Chasing Pet Food Trends

This perpetual product churn isn’t driven by breakthrough discoveries in animal nutrition science. It’s happening because the pet industry operates on a relentless fear of irrelevance. Brands aren’t racing to solve unmet needs in pet health—they’re racing to ensure they’re not left behind when a competitor launches something that captures consumer attention.

Marketing Moves Faster Than Science

Marketing teams monitor social media trends more closely than they follow nutritional research. Product development is guided less by “What do pets need?” and more by “What’s gaining traction on TikTok?”

The Hidden Costs of Pet Food Trends

The fallout from this approach lands squarely on your shoulders as a conscientious pet owner.

Instead of clarity, you get confusion.

Instead of confidence in your choices, you get constant doubt about whether you’re providing the “best” for your beloved companion.

When confronted with that newest formula boasting “now with added selenium yeast and Icelandic algae,” pause and ask the essential question:

What specific, documented health problem is this actually addressing for my individual pet?

In the overwhelming majority of cases, you’ll discover it’s addressing the brand’s fear of market share decline, not a legitimate nutritional gap in your pet’s diet.

Behind the Influencer Curtain

You’ve seen it dozens of times: that lovable Bernedoodle with 1.2 million followers suddenly announces they’ve discovered a “game-changing” new food.

The cinematic reel unfolds like a mini-documentary, first showing the pet’s previous “dull” coat and “low energy,” followed by a dramatic transformation just eight weeks later. The camera zooms in on a gleaming coat, bright eyes, and playful zoomies, all backed by emotional music and compelling captions about how this one dietary change “saved my dog’s life.”

What the carefully edited content doesn’t reveal:

The $15,000 (or more!) payment that preceded this miraculous conversion

The fact that the dog was already on a rotating diet of premium foods before the partnership

That the “before” footage was deliberately shot in poor lighting with a less enthusiastic pet

Most telling of all, once the contracted posting period ends, you’ll never see that “life-changing” product appear in their feed again. They’ve already moved on to the next sponsored miracle.

When every brand claims to be revolutionary, how do you find what truly works? At NorthPoint Pets, we analyze the actual formulations behind the marketing claims, helping you distinguish between meaningful improvements and trend-chasing modifications that don’t benefit your pet.

If you’re tired of deciphering cryptic ingredient lists, questioning influencer motives, and wondering whether premium prices actually deliver premium results, you’ve found your solution. Visit NorthPoint Pets for straightforward guidance based on nutritional science and practical experience, not paid endorsements and clever marketing tactics.

Pet obesity is a growing concern, with up to 65% of dogs in the United States considered overweight or obese (Grota, 2022). The situation is similar in cats, with approximately 50% of cats seen at veterinary clinics being overweight or obese (McDaniel, n.d.). While overfeeding and inadequate exercise are common causes of obesity, traditional diets may not always work for every pet. This article explores why this is the case and discusses the importance of diets designed with differing macronutrients and micronutrients.

Why Traditional Diets May Not Always Work

Traditional pet diets often focus on providing a balanced diet with all the necessary nutrients. However, these diets may not consider the individual needs of each pet. For instance, some pets may have medical conditions like hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease that cause obesity (Grota, 2022). Additionally, certain breeds like Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are predisposed to obesity (Grota, 2022).

Moreover, the practice of “free feeding,” where a bowl of dry food is available for consumption by a pet throughout the day, can contribute to obesity. This is because it allows the pet to consume excessive amounts of food that is constantly available (McDaniel, n.d.).

The Importance of Macronutrients and Micronutrients

Designing a diet with differing macronutrients and micronutrients can help address the issue of pet obesity. Macronutrients, including proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, provide energy and are required in large amounts. Micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, are needed in smaller quantities but are essential for various bodily functions.

Understanding Calories and Their Sources

Calories come from 3 places: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. While fat is the most calorically dense macronutrient, high-fat diets don’t necessarily result in more body fat – metabolism is a lot more complex than that. However, a diet that is predominately carbohydrates can and often does result in greater body fat, and increasing body weight over time.

For instance, a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates can be beneficial for cats and dogs struggling with weight. While this may not mean ditching kibble completely, it can mean adding in fresh foods (cooked or raw), canned food and even freeze-dried options to help reduce the overall carbohydrate content.

The Problem With Feeding the Same Thing Every Day

Feeding pets the same food every day can lead to a lack of variety in their diet, which may not only contribute to obesity but also to finicky eating habits. According to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, many pets are content to eat a single food, but some may develop selective eating habits and become very selective about what foods they’ll accept. Feeding your cat two or three different foods provides flavor variety and may prevent your pet from developing an exclusive preference for a single food (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, n.d.).

The Benefits of Variety in Proteins, Food Types, and Fresh Foods

Incorporating a variety of proteins, food types (like canned, dry, freeze-dried, cooked or raw), and fresh foods like fruits and vegetables can help combat pet obesity. Different proteins provide different profiles of essential amino acids, and rotating them can ensure a more balanced intake.

Understanding Calorie Content in Pet Food Varieties

Commercial pet foods are formulated as dry, canned, raw, cooked, freeze dried – each with its own advantages. They also have vastly different macronutrient (protein, fat and carbohydrate) composition, and thus very different caloric density. This means that one cup of dry pet food has a very different calorie content than one cup of freeze dried foods. Utilizing different types of foods requires careful planning and measuring to ensure your pet consumes the right calories and nutrients for their age, weight and lifestyle.

The Role of Fresh Foods in Reducing Obesity

Adding fresh foods like fruits and vegetables can provide additional nutrients and fiber, and protect against some of the risks of processed foods (like canned and dry foods). They also help pets feel fuller without adding a lot of calories. However, it’s important to note that not all fruits and vegetables are safe, and adding too much can cause the diet to become unbalanced. It’s important to obtain some help when getting started. Our team is ready and more than happy to help ensure it’s easy and not overwhelming.

How the Processing of Kibble and Canned Food Contributes to Obesity

In recent years scientists have learned that the processing of pet food has unintended consequences. Advanced Glycation End Products, commonly known as AGEs, are compounds that are formed when proteins or fats combine with sugars in the bloodstream. This process is known as glycation. AGEs can also be found in foods, especially those that are high in fat and protein, and their levels increase when food is cooked at high temperatures, such as during frying or grilling for humans – or the processes used to make kibble and canned food in pets

How AGEs Contribute to Pet Obesity

AGEs are of particular interest in medicine at the moment because they can contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. Inflammation is the body’s response to injury or illness, but when it becomes chronic, it can lead to various health problems. Oxidative stress, on the other hand, occurs when there’s an imbalance between the production of free radicals, which are harmful molecules, and the body’s ability to counteract their harmful effects.

Link Between Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Obesity

Both inflammation and oxidative stress are associated with obesity, a condition characterized by excessive body fat. Obesity is a major risk factor for several chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. Research shows that our pets consume 122 times the amount of AGEs that humans do (van Rooijen, 2014) – and the 2 main reasons is they eat predominately kibble or canned food AND they don’t often consume fresh fruits and vegetables which combat the harmful effects of AGEs.

Reducing AGEs in Your Pet’s Diet

The good news is that the amount of AGEs in our pets diets can be reduced. Cooking methods that use moist heat, shorter cooking times, and lower temperatures can help minimize the formation of AGEs. This means incorporating, fresh, gently cooked and raw options into our pets bowls can have a significant benefit. In fact, research from the University of Helsinki and Instinct Pet Food has shown adding just 20% fresh food to a bowl of processed pet foods has a dramatic effect on reducing inflammation within our pets bodies!

Therefore, by understanding the role of AGEs and making conscious dietary choices, we can potentially reduce our risk of obesity and its associated health problems.

It’s Not One Size Fits All!

While traditional diets can provide a balanced diet for pets, they may not always work for every pet, especially those prone to obesity. It’s important to consider the individual needs of each pet, including their breed, age, and any existing medical conditions. Diets designed with differing macronutrients and micronutrients can help address these individual needs and combat pet obesity.

One crucial aspect of this is understanding how our pets’ food choices impact their health at a cellular level. This brings us to the topic of Advanced Glycation End Products, or AGEs. You might be familiar with AGEs in the context of human health, where they are known to contribute to aging and various chronic diseases. But did you know that our furry companions, who often consume more AGEs than we do, are also affected by these molecules[1]? While research on AGEs in pets isn’t as extensive as it is for humans, it’s essential to consider their potential impact on our pets’ health and well-being.

Understanding AGEs and Their Impact on Health

Advanced glycation end products are molecules formed when sugars react with proteins and fats in the body, a process called glycation. Glycation occurs naturally as part of the aging process. However, certain lifestyle factors, such as a diet high in sugars and processed foods, can speed up the formation of AGEs.

In humans, AGEs can accumulate in tissues throughout the body, including the skin, arteries, kidneys, and brain. This buildup can lead to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and damage to cells and tissues. These effects are linked to various age-related diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and certain cancers[2]. While we don’t have the same level of research connecting AGEs to specific diseases in dogs and cats, the mechanisms of damage caused by AGEs are likely similar across species[3].

The Role of Ultra-Processed Foods

In the context of human diets, ultra-processed foods—such as sugary snacks, fast food, and ready-to-eat meals—are major contributors to AGE formation[4]. These foods are often high in sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial ingredients. Similarly, in the pet food industry, kibble and canned foods are often highly heat-processed, and that can lead to higher AGE levels in your pets’ bodies[5].

Lesser Processed Pet Food Options

Choosing less processed food options for your pets can significantly reduce their AGE intake. Fresh, minimally processed diets, such as raw or gently cooked foods, are closer to their natural diet and are typically lower in AGEs. These diets are akin to humans opting for whole, fresh foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains over processed snacks and fast food.

Importantly, even adding a small amount of fresh foods to more processed diets can have a healthful impact on your pet. This can mean fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, or additions of raw or gently cooked options.

The Role of AGEs in the Aging Process

AGEs contribute to aging by causing structural and functional changes in proteins, leading to a loss of elasticity and flexibility in tissues and organs. This can manifest in various ways, such as stiffening of blood vessels, reduced kidney function, and skin aging. In pets, these changes can affect their mobility, organ function, and overall quality of life as they age.

Reducing AGE Formation for Better Health

Reducing the formation of AGEs in the body can help mitigate their harmful effects. Here are some practical strategies:

Limit Sugar Intake: A diet low in sugar and refined carbohydrates can reduce the production of AGEs. Opt for the addition of minimally processed foods for your pets whenever possible.

Antioxidant-Rich Diet: Antioxidants can help neutralize the damaging effects of AGEs. Include foods rich in antioxidants in your pet’s diet, such as fresh fruits and vegetables if appropriate for their species and diet.

Regular Exercise: Physical activity helps reduce AGE accumulation by improving overall metabolic health and reducing oxidative stress[6].

Conclusion

While we still have much to learn about the specific effects of AGEs on our pets, it’s clear that their diet and lifestyle play a significant role in their health and longevity. By making informed choices about their nutrition and promoting a healthy lifestyle, we can help minimize the impact of AGEs and support our pets in living long, vibrant lives.
