In today’s economy, every dollar counts, and as a pet parent, you want to ensure your best friend gets ideal nutrition without breaking the bank. It’s tempting to judge dog food by its cost per pound, but this strategy can be misleading. Let’s explore why cost per pound isn’t the most effective way to determine the value of your dog’s food and how you can make better choices for their health and your wallet.

The Hidden Costs of Low Price Per Pound

Nutritional Density Matters

It’s crucial to understand that not all dog foods are created equal. Foods with a lower cost per pound often have ingredients that provide fewer nutrients per serving. This means you might end up feeding your dog more to meet their nutritional needs, leading to higher overall costs.

Additionally, pet food labels do not provide information about the food’s digestibility. This is why we require our brands to conduct third-party digestibility testing on all their finished formulas. Some brands rely solely on the digestibility of individual ingredients. However, these individual values do not account for processing losses, ingredient interactions, or the impact of fiber on nutrient bioavailability. Full digestibility trials for each formula provide a more accurate assessment.

Caloric Content

Higher-quality dog foods typically have a higher caloric density, meaning each cup of food contains more calories. This allows you to feed your dog less while still providing them with the energy they need. Cheaper foods often have lower caloric content, requiring larger portions and increasing the cost per serving.

Furthermore, the higher price tag often reflects the extensive testing that pet food undergoes before reaching our shelves. This includes formulation by a board-certified nutritionist, pathogen testing, and comprehensive nutrient analysis just to name a few. These measures ensure that pet food brands deliver products you can trust for their quality and safety. (Spoiler Alert: You’d be amazed how many brands do NOT conduct these tests!)

Long-Term Health Benefits

Investing in high-quality dog food can save you money in the long run by promoting better health and potentially reducing vet bills. Foods made with premium ingredients, including minimally-processed animal-sourced proteins, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, and natural additives, often provide better nutrition. This can contribute to a lower risk of developing health issues such as obesity, allergies, and digestive problems, which can be more prevalent with lower-cost foods that may contain vague ultra-processed ingredients and less digestible proteins.

A Better Way to Evaluate Dog Food Costs

Cost Per Serving

Calculate the cost per serving or per day based on your dog’s caloric needs. Remember, feeding recommendations are based on moderate daily activity, which often exceeds the exercise most pets actually get. It’s important to consider your dog’s age, weight, daily activity level, breed, gender, and neuter status to accurately assess their caloric needs. This provides a clearer picture of the true cost of feeding your dog and allows for a more effective comparison between different brands.

Ingredient Quality

Look beyond the price tag and consider the ingredient list. High-quality proteins, fruits, vegetables, and lesser processed ingredients generally provide higher quality nutrition and are often more digestible, leading to better overall health for your dog.

Another factor to consider is the quality, sourcing, and processing of your pet food ingredients. For example, protein products such as meat meals and carbohydrates like grains and potatoes often undergo significant processing before being combined with other ingredients. When these processed ingredients are included in the food formula, they are subjected to high-temperature processing multiple times, which can increase the formation of cooking toxins known as advanced glycation end-products (known as AGEs) and raises the risk of potential health issues.

Making Informed Choices for Your Dog

A myriad of factors can make choosing a pet food challenging. However, we encourage you to consider the long-term benefits of a pet food that has been tested for nutritional adequacy, has reputable ingredient sourcing, and contains quality, minimally-processed ingredients. The upfront cost may be higher, but the investment pays off in the form of a healthier, happier pet and fewer trips to the vet.

At NorthPoint Pets & Company, we are dedicated to transforming pet health through science-based nutrition and personalized care. We aim to educate pet parents on crucial aspects of pet nutrition that are often overlooked or misunderstood. One significant issue is the dog feeding guidelines provided by pet food companies, which can lead to overfeeding and associated health problems.

Why Feeding Recommendations Can Be Misleading

Most pet food feeding guidelines are based on the needs of moderately active dogs. However, these recommendations don’t account for the fact that many pets today lead very sedentary lifestyles. Our dogs often get just 20 minutes in the yard or a short walk each day. Additionally, many dog owners unintentionally mismeasure their pet’s food with incorrect measuring utensils or by overlooking differences in calorie density when switching foods. This can further complicate ensuring your dog receives the appropriate amount of nutrients and calories for their activity level. These disparities can lead to overfeeding, resulting in weight gain, obesity, and related health issues like joint disease and accelerated aging.

Understanding Activity Levels: Low, Medium, and High

Veterinary nutritionists classify dogs into three activity levels when calculating their caloric needs:

Activity Level

Description

Miles per Day

Moderate Activity Time

Intense Activity Time

Caloric Needs

Low Activity

Dogs that spend most of their time indoors with limited physical exercise. They might only have short walks or play sessions.

Less than 2 miles

Less than 30 minutes

Less than 10 minutes

Lower caloric needs to maintain a healthy weight.

Medium Activity

Moderately active dogs with regular daily walks, some playtime, and occasional runs or hikes.

2-3 miles

30-60 minutes

10-20 minutes

Balanced caloric needs reflecting moderate energy expenditure.

High Activity

Highly active dogs involved in strenuous activities like long-distance running, agility training, or working dogs with demanding physical tasks.

More than 3 miles

More than 60 minutes

More than 20 minutes

Significantly higher caloric intake to support high energy requirements.

Based on this information, the majority of dogs fall in the low activity category. The average dog gets a brief walk in the morning, another walk when owners arrive home from work, and maybe a short play session in the yard. The majority of their day is spent sleeping or lounging. Unless the dog is walking an average of 2-3 miles a day, it generally falls in the low activity range.

With that said, very few dogs fall into the moderate or “active” category. Even if your dog gets exercise 2-3 times a week, they can still fall in the “low activity” range.

The Emotional Impact of Overfeeding

We know it can be tough to hear that our pets might be overweight or that we’re overfeeding them. After all, we show our love through treats and meals. But, just like in humans, maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for their well-being. Think of it this way: by feeding them the right amount, you’re ensuring they live a longer, healthier, and happier life.

A Gentle Approach to Healthy Change

We understand that increasing your pet’s activity might not always be feasible due to time constraints. However, there are simple, effective changes you can make to improve your pet’s health:

Tailored Feeding Plans: Consider adjusting the portion sizes based on your pet’s activity level. We can help you calculate the right amount of food for your pet’s specific needs.

Healthy Treats: Opt for low-calorie nutritious treats and use them sparingly. Fresh fruit and vegetables can replace high calorie processed biscuits. Treats should complement your pet’s diet, not comprise a significant portion of their daily intake.

Regular Monitoring: Keep an eye on your pet’s weight and body condition. Stop in anytime to use our dog scale. While you’re here, talk to one of our friendly team members to discuss your pet’s nutrition plan.

Enrichment Activities: While increasing physical activity might be challenging, mental stimulation is equally important. Puzzle toys, interactive games, and training sessions can keep your pet engaged and active.

Tailored Nutrition for Your Dog

At NorthPoint Pets & Company, we’re committed to supporting you every step of the way. We offer a broad selection of pet foods and essential supplements, backed by research and tailored to various needs and budgets. Our team is here to provide expert advice and personalized care to ensure your pet thrives.

Remember, small changes can make a big difference in your pet’s health. By adjusting their diet and incorporating enriching activities, you can help your pet lead a happier, healthier life.

That’s why we have compiled a series of common concerns and their answers about switching to a fresh or raw food diet. To address some of the most frequently raised topics, we hope this information will help you navigate the transition to a fresh food diet with confidence

Concern: My Pet Isn’t Drinking Water After Switching to a Fresh Diet

Fresh food diets, such as raw or gently cooked meals, have a high moisture content, unlike dry kibble diets which typically contain less than 10% moisture. Dry kibble often leaves pets sub-clinically dehydrated, leading them to seek out additional water. However, fresh food diets provide ample moisture directly from the food, which is an excellent source of hydration. So, if your pet is drinking less water after switching to a fresh diet, it’s completely normal and indicates that they are likely well-hydrated.

Regardless of this decreased thirst, always offer plenty of fresh, clean water daily. You can also increase hydration by adding bone broth or raw goat milk to your pet’s meals. Signs of dehydration include lethargy, loss of appetite, excessive panting, dry and/or pale nose, and gums. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.

Concern: Changes in Bowel Movements After Switching to a Fresh Diet

It’s quite common for pets to experience changes in their bowel movements when transitioning to a fresh food diet. One noticeable change is that they may poop less often or have smaller stools. This is entirely expected and can be attributed to the improved digestibility and nutrient utilization of fresh food.

Unlike many commercial diets that contain ingredients the body struggles to process, fresh food diets provide highly concentrated and easily digestible components. These nutrients are efficiently broken down and utilized by the body, resulting in minimal waste at the end of the digestive process. Consequently, pets on fresh food diets may have fewer and smaller stools since their bodies are extracting more value from the food they consume.

While the change in bowel movements may initially seem unusual, it’s actually a positive sign that your pet is efficiently utilizing the nutrients from their diet. As long as your pet doesn’t exhibit signs of discomfort or other health concerns, the adjustment in their bowel movements is generally considered normal and reflects the improved nutritional quality of their fresh food diet. Regardless, it’s important to continue observing your pet’s bathroom habits to monitor their overall health.

Concern: Changes in Stool Consistency, Color, and Texture on a Fresh Diet

It’s perfectly normal for pets to experience changes in the consistency, color, and texture of their poop when transitioning to a fresh food diet. These changes can be attributed to several factors, similar to the ones mentioned earlier.

Firstly, minimally processed diets often have higher digestibility and bioavailability, resulting in better nutrient absorption. As a result, you may notice that your pet’s poop becomes harder, smaller, or drier in texture. Some pet owners even describe it as “powdery.” This can be particularly noticeable when the diet includes increased bone content, which provides calcium and phosphorus. A diet rich in fiber can also contribute to firmer stools.

In terms of color, you might observe that your pet’s poop becomes darker, almost black, or even lighter in color. Darker stools can be a result of the increased organ meat in the diet, which is high in iron. Similarly, lighter stools may indicate a higher proportion of nutrients such as calcium from ground bone.

Furthermore, the reduced volume of waste in the stools is a result of the body effectively utilizing the nutrients from the fresh food diet. If these stools are left out on the lawn and not picked up, they may disintegrate or dissolve into the ground more quickly than other types of stool due to their decreased feed content.

It’s essential to remember that these changes in poop consistency, color, and texture are generally considered normal and indicate that your pet’s body is efficiently processing and benefiting from the nutrients in their fresh food diet. However, if you notice any other concerning symptoms or if the changes persist for an extended period, consult with your veterinarian for further guidance.

Concern: Changes in Pet’s Energy, Behavior, and Calmness on a Fresh Diet

It’s not uncommon for pets to experience changes in their energy levels, behavior, and overall calmness when switched to a fresh food diet. Many pet owners report that their pets exhibit a more consistent level of energy throughout the day after transitioning to a raw or fresh diet. They often notice increased calmness, improved focus, and better training performance. Senior pets may also experience increased energy. These changes can be attributed to the significant impact of a minimally processed diet on the gut microbiome as well as rich amino acid profiles.

A fresh food diet, rich in whole and minimally processed ingredients, supports a healthy and balanced gut microbiome. Your pet’s gut microbiome is home to trillions of beneficial bacteria that influence various aspects of health, including mental well-being. When the gut microbiome is balanced with diverse bacterial communities, it positively affects neurotransmitter production and regulation, leading to enhanced mental stability and a balanced demeanor in pets.²

Furthermore, minimally processed diets provide an excellent source of amino acids–the building blocks of proteins. Amino acids like tryptophan and tyrosine act as precursors to neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, and adrenaline.² These neurotransmitters help to regulate the body’s mood and behavior by promoting relaxation. In dogs and cats, this can often mean less fear and anxiety during stressful situations, reduced hyperactivity, and a generally calmer demeanor.

This positive shift in energy, behavior, and mental well-being can be attributed to the nourishing properties of a fresh food diet. Minimal processing allows for optimal nutrient absorption, ensuring that your pet receives the necessary building blocks for a healthy body and mind.

Concern: Weight Change on a Fresh Diet

Minor weight loss is a common occurrence when pets transition from a kibble to fresh food, and it is usually not a cause for concern. However, it is important to monitor your pet closely to determine if adjustments to feeding measurements are necessary.

During the initial period of adjusting to a raw diet, it is normal to observe a slight decrease in body weight. This can be attributed to the lower carbohydrate content in fresh food diets compared to kibble. In addition, studies show that ultra-processed diets increase the body’s production of AGE’s, which cause inflammation.6

Therefore, decreased weight is often a positive sign that the body is reducing inflammation and undergoing effective detoxification.

Additionally, fresh food diets provide the necessary nutrients for healthy energy, leading to enhanced muscle definition in pets. We generally observe a short period of slight weight loss, followed by a plateau with no changes, and then a slight increase in body weight that your pet maintains long term.

Conversely, some pets who have difficulty maintaining a healthy weight due to malabsorption may have success putting on extra pounds with a fresh diet. This is because minimally processed diets are often easier for some pets to digest and metabolize. This improved digestion and nutrient absorption can support the body in maintaining a healthy level of body fat and muscle, potentially aiding in weight gain for those pets in need.

It’s important to maintain a healthy body weight for your pet, so it’s vital to be attentive to their weight. However, a small degree of weight change is typically expected when switching to a fresh food diet. Always prioritize the maintenance of healthy body weight for your pet, and if you have concerns about their weight loss or overall health, check in with our team for personalized guidance.

Conclusion

We pride ourselves on listening to your concerns and providing as much information as we can to assist in your pet’s overall health and wellness. However, diet and nutrition are not “one size fits all”, and no single diet is best for all pets. We encourage you to consult with our team and your veterinarian to tailor a diet that suits your pet’s specific needs, taking into consideration their age, breed, health conditions, and personal preferences.

A powerful strategy that’s often missed is the principle of pet food rotation. Let’s delve into why this tactic is so powerful in pet nutrition.

What Is Pet Food Rotation?

Pet food rotation is the practice of diversifying your pet’s food sources over intervals—be it every few weeks, every few months, or each time you buy pet food. This can include different formulas of a single brand or a variety of brands and extends to all food types: dry kibble, canned wet, and frozen raw.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, the key is to tailor the rotation to fit your pet’s unique nutritional demands. Remember, the essence of this practice is to present a variety of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to your pet, enhancing both their digestive and immune health.

Top 5 Benefits of Pet Food Rotation:

Combat Boredom & Boost Mental Stimulation

Just like humans, pets can get bored with repetitive meals. By rotating their food, you introduce new flavors, textures, and aromas, keeping their taste buds engaged and their meals exciting. Cats in particular can benefit from regular rotation to avoid food aversion. By refreshing their palate regularly, you’ll be curbing picky eating behaviors and fostering a robust appetite.

Nurture a Diverse Gut Microbiome

The gut microbiome is crucial to your pet’s digestive health and immune system. Your pet’s gut microbiome is home to trillions of beneficial bacteria that influence various aspects of health. Different food sources introduce new beneficial bacteria, cultivating a richer gut microbiome. This results in improved digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune defense.

Ensure Diet Continuity Amidst Disruptions

Unforeseen circumstances like recalls, formula changes, or supply issues can disrupt the availability of specific pet food formulas. By rotating your pet’s food, you ensure they have alternative options readily available. It also acclimates the digestive system to a variety of protein, fat, and carbohydrate sources. This avoids a sudden change in diet, which can lead to digestive issues or refusal to eat. Therefore, rotating through multiple food options helps prevent digestive upset during unexpected circumstances.

Avoid Potential Nutritional Gaps

No single pet food can claim to be the ultimate source of nutrition. Every brand and protein type comes with its unique nutritional profile, excelling in some nutrients while potentially falling short in others. For instance, a diet dominated by chicken could upset the balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, potentially leading to inflammation. Conversely, rotating between diverse protein sources offers a holistic solution. This approach ensures that pets receive a well-rounded mix of essential nutrients, avoiding the pitfalls of over-reliance on any single source. By diversifying the diet, we mitigate risks of nutrient excesses, deficits, and other potential imbalances, promoting overall health.

Leverage Nutrient Richness from Varied Proteins

Different proteins bring a plethora of nutritional benefits to the table. For instance, fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, enhances skin health, promoting a radiant coat. Beef is rich in iron and zinc which boost immune function and vitality. By cycling through these protein varieties, we ensure our pets consume a broad spectrum of essential nutrients. This diversified approach not only enriches their diet but also elevates their overall well-being.

Pro-Tip! Ensure to introduce any new food slowly and in small quantities. Increase over time and monitor to ensure your pet is tolerating the changes well. Not every type of food agrees with every pet, so take care to feed only those foods that don’t show any signs of digestive upset.
Conclusion

Food rotation is more than just a dietary change—it’s an investment in your pet’s holistic wellness. Being attentive to meal portion size is an important detail for maintaining not just our pet’s weight, but their whole body health.

Why ‘Eyeballing’ Isn’t Enough

Feeding your pet the right amount of food is crucial for their overall health and well-being. Do you feed a “handful” or a “scoop” of dry food? Do you just fill your pet’s bowl? If so, exactly how much is that “scoop” or “handful”? Is your measurement more or less than a cup?

If you’re guilty of “eyeballing” the amount of food you feed your pet, it’s important to understand why we advise against doing so.

Accurate portions at mealtime are imperative to prevent obesity – an epidemic taking years off our pets’ lives. A generous meal here or there may not have any ill effects, however over time these inaccuracies add up. Consistently overestimating food portions causes excessive daily calorie intake. Further opportunities for inaccuracy arise when assessing different kibble types. Kibble shape and size vary greatly from brand to brand, small breed to average to large breed, etc.

The Benefits of Measuring Your Pet’s Food Accurately

Using a labeled measuring cup or utensil (or a scale for raw food) ensures that your pet is getting the right amount of food they need each day. Accurate measurement is important information to have if a veterinarian or nutritionist were to assist with dietary needs.

Proper measurement also helps you keep track of their daily intake, so you can adjust their diet if necessary. This is especially important if you’re trying to maintain a healthy weight or troubleshoot digestive issues. For example, if your pet frequently has loose stools, it may be recommended to decrease the amount of food to ease digestion. However, if your measurement is a rough estimate, it’s challenging to predict if an increase or decrease would benefit your pet.

Feeding your pet the right amount of food can also save you money in the long run. By feeding an appropriate amount, you avoid overfeeding your pet and potentially wasting food.

Factors that Affect How Much Food Your Pet Needs

It’s important to note that the amount of food your pet needs may vary depending on factors such as their age, weight, activity level, and health history. The use of meal toppers, treats, recreational bones and chews also affect calorie requirements.

We believe that all pets have unique nutritional requirements. Therefore, the feeding guidelines on your pet’s bag of food may not be ideal for them.

Tips for Measuring Your Pet’s Food Effectively

Measuring your pet’s food doesn’t have to be a complicated process. For dry food (kibble), simply use a labeled measuring cup or utensil to portion out the appropriate amount of food for your pet’s size and unique nutritional needs. For a raw diet, it’s important to use an accurate kitchen food scale. Sometimes we may suggest feeding a “heaping” or “scant” measure versus a level measure. Small variances in a day may not have a major impact, but over weeks or months they can make a noticeable difference!

It’s also noteworthy to emphasize the importance of feeding appropriately sized kibble for your pet. A cup of small breed (small bites) kibble offers significantly more volume than the same measurement of a large breed kibble. In scientific terms, volume refers to the amount of space occupied by an object. If you fill a glass jar with tiny pebbles and then replace them with golf balls, the pebbles would have a greater volume because they would occupy more space in the jar. Therefore, it’s important to understand the value of appropriate (accurate) feeding measurements tailored for your pet.

What Does Science Say?

Studies show that even when kibble is measured with a measuring cup, precision feeding is challenging to achieve. Although pet food labels provide feeding guidelines in cups, nutrient values are calculated by weight. Ideally, all pet food, including dry extruded kibble, should be weighed on a kitchen food scale for the most accuracy. Using a scale enables pet owners to precisely measure dry food weights, ensuring accurate caloric intake. This is particularly beneficial for overweight pets to achieve weight loss and for lean pets to maintain optimal weight.

Proper Measurement is Key for a Healthy Pet

Measuring your pet’s food accurately is an important step in keeping them healthy and happy. By using a labeled measuring cup or scale, you can ensure that your pet is getting the right amount of food they need each day. So, let’s all commit to measuring our pets’ food and providing them with the best possible care.

They have a gorgeous facility with state-of-the-art equipment and a compassionate team to offer their clients education, guidance, and individualized care. >

At NorthPoint, we take great pride in our team of experts, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience. Our passion for pets and their well-being is evident in everything we do. One of our greatest strengths lies in our team’s diverse perspectives and collaborative approach to problem-solving. As a result, we can provide our customers and their pets with the best possible care.

A primary differential for NorthPoint is that we don’t just sell products. Instead, we offer a service that provides unbiased information, guidance, and advice tailored to each pet’s unique needs and its owner. Our customers trust us as a reliable resource to help them make informed decisions, even if it means recommending products we don’t carry.

We shared our belief that every pet is unique and deserves customized advice based on their individual needs. That’s why we invest heavily in the education of our team, allowing us to offer science-backed nutritional advice and personalized recommendations. Our core values of nutrition, transparency and respect for others guide every decision we make, from the products we carry to the relationships we build with our customers.

We discussed the challenges that pet owners face when it comes to deciphering marketing claims and choosing the right products for their pets. That’s why Nicci has enrolled in the University of Georgia’s Canine Nutrition doctoral program. Additionally, Jenna recently enrolled in online courses from the University of Glasgow to pursue her diploma in Animal Nutrition. Lastly, our full-time team member Morgan, a Certified Veterinary Technician, just completed a 6 month Natural Animal Nutrition from the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies. This advanced education gives us unparalleled expertise and an unbiased perspective that we can share with our customers.

Lastly, we shared our safety and quality standards for the products that we carry, including the 8 questions we ask companies before we introduce their products. Ultimately, these standards not only give us confidence in our recommendations, but also aim to improve the standards for transparency across the entire pet industry.

After the presentation, the MAH team asked questions about topics like common health concerns (such as kidney disease and allergies), and why we recommend hydrating kibble. They also gave us a tour of their beautiful facility.

This meeting was an incredible experience for both teams. It was an amazing opportunity to collaborate with other pet professionals, to share our experiences and insights that can benefit not only our teams, but ultimately the pets and pet parents we work with.

Not all pet emergencies are life-threatening. Some are simply inconveniences that always seem to happen at 5 p.m. on a Friday when your vet is going home for the weekend.

When that happens, you need to be your pet’s first responder. This means having the right tools on hand to successfully deal with these “urgent care” but not “emergency care” issues.

Based on our experience, here are the top four items you should always have readily available in your home.

Skunk Shampoo. One of life’s rules is that your pet will get sprayed by a skunk after business hours. Always keep a bottle of Skout’s Honor Skunk Odor Eliminator in your bathroom – maybe two bottles because some dogs just aren’t fast learners when it comes to skunks.

Pro Tip: If your pet has an unfortunate encounter with a skunk, DO NOT bathe them. Skunk spray spreads like oil, so contact with water will only spread the oil and make it more stubborn to remove. Follow our guide here for directions.

Pumpkin. What’s worse than a pet with diarrhea? Maybe a pet who lost a fight with a skunk and has diarrhea? Diarrhea is another medical event that happens where there is carpet and after your vet is closed. Our favorite home remedy for combating diarrhea is pumpkin. Pumpkin is a simple, easy shelf-stable item that can work wonders for an upset belly because it’s rich in fiber. Our favorites are Weruva Pumpkin Patch Up Pouches because they are single serving so you don’t have to use a whole can of pumpkin before it spoils.

Styptic powder. If you’ve ever trimmed your pet’s nails too short and cut the quick (inner vein), you know first hand just how much they can bleed. Styptic powder acts as a coagulant to help the blood clot to stop the bleeding. Since it works on any open (bleeding) wound, it’s an excellent tool to keep in your emergency kit.

Tick Key. Nuisance hitchhiking pets like ticks are never a welcome surprise. No matter where you walk your pet, it’s wise to keep a tick key on hand in case you find one engorged in your pet’s skin because they make tick removal simple and stress-free. Our favorite is The Tick Key.

Remember that any treatment you administer to your pet should be immediately followed up with veterinary care.

If you have questions about what to include in your home pet emergency kit, please stop by the store. We have a lot of experience on the most common ailments and injuries our customer’s pets experience and would love to help you be better prepared to help your pet.

Cats are creatures of habit and disrupting their daily routine can cause stress and anxiety. However, it’s important to note that this behavior is not normal or healthy. As pet owners, it’s our responsibility to prepare our cats for any situation they may encounter.

One of the most significant steps we can take to reduce stress and make travel more comfortable for our cats is to acclimate them to their carrier. Many cats associate their carrier with a trip to the vet or a move to a new home, which can cause them to fear or dislike it. By helping them feel more comfortable and relaxed in their carrier, we can make the travel experience less daunting for our feline companions.

Why your cat should be comfortable in the carrier

The carrier should serve as your cat’s “safe space,” figuratively and literally. In a figurative sense, the carrier should serve as a space where your cat can feel secure and safe from harm – a place to feel comfortable and relaxed. From a literal standpoint, that carrier serves as a form of protection during transportation:

During home moving and/or vacations

If there’s an emergency that requires you to relocate on short notice

These instances are often unplanned, so it is best to be proactive in preparing your cat to be comfortable in a carrier ahead of time.

Why are cats afraid of the carrier?

Cat carriers are rarely in sight. They’re kept in storage, usually in the garage or basement. Therefore, they don’t smell or look familiar to your cat. On top of that, carriers generally only come out when scary things happen (like leaving the house for a vet visit). Cats have a powerful sense of association. They will quickly make a connection between seeing the carrier and leaving their comfortable home territory to go somewhere with unfamiliar sounds and smells. Are we surprised that the carrier evokes fear in our cats?

How do we fix it?

It’s actually quite simple to minimize the stress associated with the carrier.

First, choose the right carrier. Occasionally I’ve seen cats prefer soft carriers over hard plastic, but it doesn’t matter a ton. I find that the size of the carrier is far more important, though. Cats generally feel more comfortable in a tight space than one that they can get jostled about in. Therefore, I recommend a carrier that is barely large enough for your cat to turn herself around in.

The next step is to help your cat want to be in the carrier. This involves a bit of time and patience, but it’s incredibly easy to do with a few simple steps:

Make the carrier visible and accessible to your cat as much as possible. This means having it out in your home, preferably someplace where your cat spends a lot of time. If they enjoy looking out the window, set it nearby so they may want to watch from inside the carrier. If they enjoy sleeping under a bed, try putting the carrier where they like to sleep.

Remove the scary parts. I’m a bigger fan of hard plastic crates because they give you the option to remove certain parts for slower acclimation. I recommend starting by removing the door and top hood so that just the base piece remains. It should essentially be like an open litter box. (If your carrier is soft, open all doors and openings.) Once kitty is comfortable with this open form, you can then add the top hood and repeat the process from the start.

Make the carrier comfortable and inviting. Put down a soft fleece blanket or towel inside so that it resembles a bed. Sprinkle some catnip in it or even a few treats. You can also encourage them by feeding them a couple meals near or inside the carrier.

Walk away. Sometimes this is the hardest part, but trying to physically push a cat toward the carrier or coax them in can sometimes have adverse effects. It’s best to ignore them and let them navigate it when they feel comfortable.

The key here is to be patient and use positive reinforcement. Cats can take a long time to become comfortable with new things – sometimes several weeks – and rushing that process can potentially subtract any trust the carrier has ‘earned’ with them.

Allow your cat to investigate, sniff, and venture into the carrier on their own and reward them accordingly. Offer verbal praise, pets, and treats when they go in independently. (Exceptions to this would be if they are asleep, in which case let them sleep uninterrupted!) This helps to build your cat’s positive association with the carrier.

Reducing external stressors

While being comfortable with the carrier can reduce your cat’s stress, traveling to a new location with unfamiliar people, sounds, and smells can still be very scary. There are extra steps we can take to minimize this stress as well.

Loosely cover the crate with a light blanket or towel when traveling, leaving an opening at one end of the carrier. This helps your cat feel safer and gives her the security of being out of sight – similar to how she would hide in fearful situations.

Natural calming aids can help your cat to stay calm in scary situations. These are not sedatives but supplements with natural calming herbs like chamomile, melatonin, tryptophan, or some with CBD. These supplements are available in liquid tinctures or chewable treats. If your cat remains calm during times of travel, then the carrier won’t be associated with scary things, lessening their overall fear of the carrier.

Lastly, practice, practice, practice! The less frequently you use your cat’s carrier, the scarier it may be forthem. Therefore, you can “practice” using the carrier to acclimate your cat to the sights, sounds, and smells of areas outside your home.

You can start this process by putting your cat in the carrier (always rewarded with a treat) and going outdoors for short periods. Start with your front porch or yard. Stay there with your cat for a couple minutes, then go back inside and let kitty out and give her a treat. Repeat this process once a day for a few days.

Repeat the process, but sit in your car instead. Start with the car off, then let it run in park. When your cat seems comfortable, take her for a drive around the neighborhood.

These steps aim to help desensitize your cat to the new stimuli while also helping them learn that the crate can mean positive things (like treats!).

Helping your cat become comfortable with their carrier can significantly improve her well-being and reduce her stress during travel. By choosing the right carrier size and making it visible and accessible to your cat, you can gradually acclimate her to the carrier and help build positive associations with it. With patience, positive reinforcement, and proactive preparation, you can make the carrier a safe space for your cat and ensure that traveling with them is as stress-free as possible.

Most pet owners immediately associate fiber with healthy poop. However, fiber does much more for your pet than that. Fiber plays a significant role in the absorption of nutrients in their diet and can benefit their overall health in many ways.

Let’s take a look at the two types of fiber — soluble and insoluble — and explore how each affects your pet’s health.

Soluble Fiber

Soluble fiber is a non-digestible carbohydrate that absorbs moisture, turning into a gel-like substance during digestion. This process ultimately slows the digestive process, allowing for better nutrient absorption. Slower digestion also reduces blood sugar spikes, which is one reason sugars found in fruit don’t cause the same blood sugar spikes as cookies. Soluble fiber also promotes a healthy gut flora by feeding good bacteria (probiotics), which make up your pet’s microbiome. Without a food source (prebiotics), the good bacteria cannot survive, leading to a weakened immune system. Moreover, the bacteria break down fiber through fermentation into fatty acids, which help prevent the overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the gut.

Insoluble Fiber

Unlike soluble fiber, insoluble fiber serves a very different purpose within the gut. Insoluble fiber comes from the structural components of a plant that cannot be broken down, known as cellulose. Since these parts (aside from mechanical breakdown from chewing) cannot be degraded or fermented by gut bacteria, they have a laxative effect. This means as the food is being digested, it’s moving faster through the gastrointestinal tract. Insoluble fiber prevents constipation and keeps bowel movements regular despite decreased nutrient absorption.

Fiber can often be confused with carbohydrates in the diet. The body uses carbohydrates as a primary source of energy by breaking them down into glucose. Fiber, on the other hand, cannot be broken down because cats and dogs lack the digestive enzymes needed to convert fiber into energy. Instead, dietary fiber passes through the body undigested. Fiber is simply a type of carbohydrate.

A well-balanced diet contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. While you can gradually introduce more fiber-rich foods like cooked pumpkin or specialized pet food to your pet’s diet, you should remember that every pet is unique. Your dog or cat’s fiber requirements vary based on age, weight, and overall health.

We recommend higher fiber diets to help pets improve health and wellness in three key areas:

Weight Management

Fiber can help your pet feel fuller for longer periods. As soluble fiber absorbs water in the gut, it expands and fills the stomach, allowing your pet to feel full and satiated. Additionally, since insoluble fiber can slow the rate of digestion, this feeling of fullness can last longer. Since most fiber sources are extremely low in fat and calories, it’s an excellent tool for maintaining or achieving a healthy weight.

Gut Health

Feeding your dog fiber significantly impacts gut health by nourishing the beneficial bacteria in the digestive system. This, in turn, stimulates the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including butyrate. Butyrate plays a crucial role in promoting the growth of T cells, which are essential for a healthy immune system. By reducing chronic inflammation, which is the root cause of many diseases, fiber intake can help keep your pet healthy.

Anal Gland Health

Having well-formed stools isn’t just crucial for ease of backyard cleanup; your pet’s anal glands depend on them to express themselves regularly. If the stools are too soft or not large enough, anal glands can become impacted with fluid, leading to a “butt-scooting” behavior. Adding healthy fiber sources may help add volume to the stool, helping the body release the anal glands naturally during waste excretion.

Fiber for Your Pet

It’s important to note that dietary fiber needs vary between cats and dogs, and that every animal’s nutritional needs are unique. Incorporating fiber into your pet’s diet can have numerous benefits, but finding the right balance is essential. Consult with your veterinarian or our team at NorthPoint Pets to determine what kind and amount of fiber your pet needs. Our knowledgeable staff can answer any questions or concerns and help you create a well-balanced nutrition plan for your dog or cat.

Adding veggies to your dog’s diet can be a challenge, especially if your pet is a picky eater. But the benefits of greens are undeniable and it’s worth trying to incorporate them into their meals, even if it’s just occasionally. Here are some tips and tricks to encourage your dog to eat their greens:

Tips:

Ease into greens. Green veggies aren’t for every dog, so start with small amounts and wait 24-48 hours to see how they react before increasing the amount.

Start with small pieces. Don’t jump into offering your dog a bowl of fresh spinach greens or a heaping scoop of broccoli. Instead, make sure you’re offering a small amount of the new veggie according to your dog’s size. Sometimes it helps to finely chop the new food and mix it in with their bowl of food.

Experiment with different greens. Just because your dog isn’t a fan of spinach, doesn’t mean he won’t fall in love with steamed broccoli. There are so many options, so don’t be discouraged if it takes a few tries to find your dog’s favorite veggies and how he likes them prepared.

Tricks:

Make a Green Smoothie – This is far and away my favorite trick for getting dogs to enjoy their veggies because of its success rate, versatility, and easier digestion. Plus dogs love it!

Throw your veggie(s) of choice into the blender. If Fido is new to the greens thing, start with options that are mild in flavor, like romaine lettuce or baby spinach. This is a great way to incorporate multiple veggies at a time, too.

Optional: Add some super tasty, high value treats like freeze-dried beef liver or chicken breast. You can also use freeze-dried meal nuggets or sliders for this.

Pour in your dog’s favorite hydrator, like goat kefir, goat milk, or bone broth. For a thicker smoothie, add plain Greek yogurt or some banana if your dog prefers.

Blend to tasty green perfection!

You can use this smoothie as a customized meal topper, a lick mat spread, a Kong or Toppl filler, or pour into an ice cube tray and freeze for later!

Be a little fancy. The manner in which you prepare your dog’s veggies can influence not only the palatability but also digestibility. Some dogs prefer their veggies cooked – and that’s OK! In some cases, gently cooking can actually offer more health benefits because not all vegetables have nutrients that are readily bioavailable for a dog’s digestive system. Some cooking methods are better for preserving nutritional value, though. For example, lightly steaming broccoli helps to essentially pre-digest the material so it’s easier for Fido’s gut to metabolize and derive nutrients from the plant.Mashing or finely chopping gently cooked veggies is one of the better ways to offer produce overall. The increased surface area and smaller size can make digestion and metabolism easier so our pup gets the most benefits possible.

Add some ‘seasoning’. Avoid salt, pepper and other seasonings since they are unsafe for pets. If your pooch goes crazy for freeze-dried toppers like these, crumble them up and sprinkle it on top of those veggies! (Your food processor can also help you out for large batches!) If you’re looking for a pre-made topper with some added nutritional benefits, try Northwest Naturals Functional Toppers, or for fresher breath try Dentatreat as a topper.

Of course, if you’re not the cooking type, there are plenty of commercially prepared options to incorporate greens to your dog’s diet. A convenient pre-blended mix of greens and bone broth from Green Juju is a crowd favorite for palatability and gut health. Just thaw and scoop over top of your dog’s meal. Their new freeze-dried Just Greens is a super convenient shelf-stable version, too.
