And here’s the kicker: diet plays a huge role—specifically, purines.

Let’s break it down and, more importantly, figure out what you can do to keep your dog comfortable and healthy.

What Are Purines, and Why Should You Care?

Being aware of how purines affect your dog’s bladder health can help prevent serious issues down the road. Purines are natural compounds found in food, especially organ meats, certain fish, and some vegetables. A common misconception is that purines are only found in proteins. Your dog’s body metabolizes purines into uric acid, which is usually broken down further into a water-soluble form called allantoin and then excreted through urine.

In most dogs, this process works smoothly. But in certain breeds, things don’t always go according to plan, which ends up leading to a buildup of uric acid that can result in painful bladder stones.

Which Breeds Are at Risk?

Some dogs have a genetic predisposition that affects how their bodies handle purines. If you have one of these breeds, you’ll want to pay extra attention to their diet and run routine urinalyses:

Dalmatians. Unlike other dogs, Dalmatians don’t efficiently convert uric acid into allantoin, leaving them at a much higher risk of urate stone formation. It is normal to see ammonium biurate crystals in a typical Dalmatian urinalysis… This isn’t necessarily a cause for alarm. Therefore, managing their diet is non-negotiable.

English Bulldogs: While not as prone as Dalmatians, some Bulldogs can develop ammonium biurate crystals, which can turn into stones over time.

Male dogs: Regardless of breed, males are more vulnerable to urinary blockages because of their anatomy. Their narrower urethras make it easier for stones to cause obstructions. This is an emergency that requires immediate veterinary intervention.

How to Help Prevent Bladder Stones

The good news in this: Diet and hydration can go a long way in preventing problems before they start.

Choose Low-Purine Proteins
Protein sources like chicken, turkey, and some fish (like salmon and whitefish) are better options. Avoid red meats and organ meats when possible. These are packed with purines and can contribute to stone formation. Foods that are moderately higher in purines are okay to give in moderation.

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
Encourage your dog to drink plenty of fresh water. More water means more diluted urine, which helps prevent crystal and sludge buildup.

Regular Bathroom Breaks
Holding urine for long periods increases the risk of stone formation. Make sure your dog has frequent opportunities to relieve themselves.

Incorporate Moisture-Rich Foods
If your dog primarily eats dry kibble, consider adding some water, pet-safe bone broth, wet food, toppers, etc., to increase their moisture intake.

Monitoring & Veterinary Care

Even if you’re doing everything right, regular veterinary checkups are essential. Routine urinalysis should be performed. This can detect early crystal formation, allowing you to tweak your dog’s diet before stones become a problem. Additionally, Imaging (ultrasounds or X-rays) can catch stones already forming, so you can act early. Knowing the warning signs, such as if your dog is straining to urinate, having accidents, or you notice blood in their urine, don’t wait, as these could be signs of an obstruction, which is a medical emergency.

Bottom Line

Ultimately, bladder stones are painful, frustrating, and most importantly, largely preventable. By being mindful of your dog’s diet, keeping them hydrated, and working with your vet, you can help your pup stay happy, healthy, and stone-free.
1. Improved Hydration

Bone broth is a great way to add additional hydration to your pet’s diet. You can easily add this to their food as a topper. Feeding dry kibble without added moisture can often lead to chronic dehydration as the body pulls moisture from surrounding organs to break down the food. If you feed kibble (dry food), this can significantly help keep them stay hydrated, ease digestion, and maximize nutrient absorption.

2. Joint Health

Glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid are nutrients packed into bone broth to help promote collagen growth. Collagen is essential because it cushions the bones, ligaments, and tendons, which means it is crucial for joint health. Just like in humans, collagen naturally deteriorates as your pet ages. Without it, the bones have nothing between them to ease movement, leading to pain and limited mobility. Therefore, adding bone broth to the bowl diet is an easy way to keep joints healthy.

3. Liver Detox

Glycine, a vital amino acid, aids the liver in filtering toxins from your dog’s body. Bone broth’s high glycine levels support the liver’s most important function of filtering toxins from your dog’s body to detoxify its system.

4. Healthy Skin and Coat

A healthy coat and skin are essential components of overall health. Vitamins B and C promote collagen formation and cell proliferation, yielding a thick healthy coat. In addition to a healthier, softer coat, this can also help to alleviate common problems with dry, itchy skin and excessive shedding.

5. Better Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

Bone broth promotes overall gut health from glycine which helps to repair the intestinal wall and seal the gut lining. You may have heard of ‘leaky gut’, a condition in which undigested food particles can escape through an unhealthy gut – leading to a myriad of symptoms. Bone broth helps to seal this lining to prevent poor digestion. A healthy gut means better nutrient absorption, a more robust gut microbiome, and a stronger immune system.

Try serving your pet bone broth one of these ways:

Serve as a food topper over any type of food

Give to your pet as a stand alone treat

Freeze bone broth in a lick mat or puzzle toy for a longer-lasting treat

FAQ: Is Bone Broth the same as soup broth or stock?

In short, no. Avoid feeding your dog the broth you find on the shelves of the grocery store. Typically, the soup broth or stock we use in our own cooking is loaded with excess sodium, added flavors and ingredients that aren’t great for our pets. Instead, you can make your own bone broth at home or buy broth specifically made for pets.

Our team members, each with their unique insights, share a common realization: there are certain things they would never do after working at NPP. From pet food storage to dietary choices, these revelations are not just personal opinions but are rooted in a deep understanding of pet health.

“I would never pour my kibble out of the bag into a storage bin.” (Leah)

This is a dangerous practice for many reasons. Most pet parents are completely unaware that storing pet food incorrectly can have negative effects on your pet’s health and longevity. For example, many containers harbor harmful pathogens when not cleaned and dried thoroughly between bags. Additionally, the food can become rancid faster when not kept in its original packaging. Lastly, it’s always important to save your pet food packaging for referencing the date and lot codes in the case of a recall, or if your pet becomes ill. Read our evidence-based approach to proper pet food storage and follow these tips.

“I would never touch kibble without washing my hands after.” (Jenna)

We’ve been taught to think that fresh (raw) food is the only time we need to be cautious of harmful pathogens. However, your pet’s kibble is more likely to contain dangerous bacteria like salmonella, E. Coli, and campylobacter according to statistics based on FDA recalls. It’s important to wash your hands after handling any type of pet food and thoroughly clean pet bowls and any utensils used to prepare food – just like you would for yourself!
“I would never feed dry food without adding water or another hydration source.” (Missy)

It’s not widely known that dry kibble foods are incredibly dehydrating to our pets. In fact, many pets suffer from subclinical dehydration as a result of eating dry kibble. Adding hydration to the bowl in the form of bone broth or goat milk makes a huge difference in their overall health and well-being. Learn more about it here.

“I would never feed the same protein all the time.” (Nikki)

When we feed our pets the same protein constantly, it increases the likelihood of that animal developing a sensitivity to that protein. Over-exposure to a single protein source weakens the gut microbiome and can put the animal at risk of nutritional deficiencies. In contrast, rotating our pet’s meals is one of the best, easiest ways to boost their immune health through a healthy gut and a diverse, robust microbiome.

“I would never feed processed food without incorporating something fresh.” (Adriana)

Dry (kibble) foods present a myriad of challenges due to their ultra-processed nature, ranging from decreased digestibility to inflammation and dehydration. To counteract this, we advocate for supplementing our pets’ meals with fresh foods. Even simple toppers like fruit or veggie scraps may help to reduce inflammation, promote a healthy gut microbiome, and increase hydration. Check out our best tips here!

“I would never rely on the feeding guidelines on the package.” (Morgan)

Your pet’s daily caloric needs are vastly different from every other pet’s. Pet food feeding guidelines can be very deceiving. There are several factors that impact your pet’s caloric needs, including health status, medications, and individual metabolism. Being attentive to meal portion size is an important detail for maintaining not just our pet’s weight, but their whole body health.

“I would never feed my cats only dry food.” (Savannah)

A cat’s digestive physiology is vastly different from that of a dog or a human. One such difference is their biological need for a high-moisture food source. Dry food provides almost no moisture whatsoever, putting most cats at a higher risk for diseases linked to dehydration such as bladder infections and kidney disease. Find out more here.

I would never buy my pet food in bulk.” (Beth)

Buying pet food in bulk might seem cost-effective and eco-friendly, but there are serious concerns about food safety when storing more than a 30-day supply. Once a pet food bag is opened, the delicate fats in the product can oxidize, leading to rancidity. It’s best to use the food within 3-4 weeks after opening to avoid this. Moreover, pests are attracted to pet foods, especially those high in protein or refined carbohydrates like sugars. This increases the risk of harmful pathogens affecting both pets and humans. The contamination risk is too high, and if the food is compromised, disposing of a larger amount also impacts pet and human health, as well as the environment. Considering these risks, potential savings from buying in bulk can be offset by increased medical bills due to rancid or contaminated food. To learn more, read this.

“I would never buy food or meat/marrow bones for my dog from a grocery store.” (Mercedes)

We understand that purchasing your pet food and treats from a grocery store is convenient, but it’s not always the healthiest option for your dog or cat. Especially when it comes to raw meat and bones, which are sold under the premise (assumption) that they will be cooked before consumption. Therefore, raw grocery products can legally be sold despite testing positive for harmful pathogens. For your pet’s safety, it’s important to purchase products specifically for pets from a reputable source and follow these guidelines.

“I would never underestimate the value of involving a board-certified veterinary nutritionist if my pet has a recurring issue or chronic illness.” (Nicci)

Good nutrition is essential for pet health, yet due to their busy schedules most general veterinarians lack the time (due to no fault of their own) to thoroughly explore diverse food options, often relying on information from specific veterinary brands. However, there are reputable, well-researched alternatives like raw, cooked, and commercial diets available today, challenging the notion that prescription brands are the sole safe choices. Consulting a veterinary nutritionist well-versed in these alternatives can significantly impact a pet’s healing and quality of life, either by enhancing a commercial diet or devising a tailored recipe for specific conditions. We regularly recommend certified veterinary nutritionists to our clients, offering introductions upon request for those seeking to benefit their pets.

Conclusion

The experience shared by our NPP team members isn’t just about what not to do — it’s a guide to better, more informed pet care practices. Each point underscores a critical aspect of maintaining your pet’s health and overall well-being as well as challenges common misconceptions and habitual practices. Understanding these insights can be a starting point for your journey towards more knowledgeable and compassionate pet care.

In both humans and our pets, water helps regulate body temperature, supports cell function, keeps skin and joints healthy, aids in digestion, and cleanses the body of various toxins.

Optimizing our pets’ daily water intake is critical to their well-being and longevity.

1 – Many pets are what we call ‘sub-clinically dehydrated’.

This means that there aren’t outward signs that tell us your pet is not getting enough water, but during times of stress, exertion, excessive heat/humidity, or illness, signs of dehydration show up quicker. This can exacerbate whatever signs are present because your pet wasn’t optimally hydrated in the first place.

Signs of dehydration include:
lethargy

loss of appetite

excessive panting, dry and/or pale nose, and gums

If you notice any of these, seek veterinary care!

Solution:
Be sure to offer fresh drinking water each day, and replace the water when it gets low. Offering multiple water bowls, water fountains (cats!), or adding things like bone broth, fresh fruit and vegetables, water to your pet’s food at mealtime can also provide additional water, especially during warm weather!

2 – The TYPE of water you choose to provide matters!

While you can utilize distilled water, these options have had minerals removed, which may not be ideal. Various minerals and ions are important for many processes in the body and could lead to less than optimal hydration and nutrition. In fact, some research does indicate that dogs experience potassium deficiencies and heart problems from long-term consumption of distilled water.

Solution:
Use regular tap water, filtered if possible. You can also use filtered “bulk” water that comes in the 5-gallon water bottles.

3 – Say NO to ‘alkaline’ water!

While many tests have concluded that many bottled waters that claim to be alkaline actually are not alkaline when pH tested, it’s not worth the risk. Alkaline water has several health concerns that are controversial for both humans and pets:

The pH of the stomach is highly acidic, and the acidity is required to digest food optimally, control bacteria and regulate the passage of stomach contents into the intestine. When this is disrupted, all these factors could be negatively affected.

If your pet is at risk or has kidney disease, urinary conditions (e.g., crystals or stones, diabetes, or other conditions like infection or that require surgery alkaline water could complicate matters.

Solution:
Stick with regular tap or “bulk” water (see #2).

4 – Size matters.

Cats and dogs can develop an aversion to water (and food) because the whiskers on the side of their face are sensitive! When their whiskers constantly hit the sides of the bowl when they are eating and drinking, it can be painful.

Solution:
Offer a bowl with an opening wider than the span of their whiskers. Even if you don’t think it is bothersome for them, you will likely notice them drinking more water!

5 – Bowl type matters!

The topic of materials used in pet food and water bowls has received a lot of attention over the years and has been the subject of some heated debates. Here are the facts:

Like baby bottles (even BPA-free), plastic water bowls can leak hormone-disrupting chemicals and microplastics into the water (and food), especially when they are exposed to the high heat of a dishwasher or a microwave. Additionally, once the surface of plastic becomes worn, it becomes hard to clean them which leads to bacteria risk. Some pets even react to the material of some plastic bowls, resulting in redness and rashes on the snout. Avoid plastic food and water bowls.

Stainless steel has historically been most recommended as the safest option. However, new technology has provided insight into the dangers of the chemicals that these bowls also leak into food and water. These chemicals are known as ‘cutting fluids’, which are used in the manufacturing process. Additionally, many tests have shown that there are other elements often incorporated into these bowls and they are not quality stainless steel. Avoid stainless steel food and water bowls.

Safer Bowl Solutions

Solution 1:
Ceramic and glass bowls are generally the safest options as long as they are made with quality materials meant for culinary use and designed for exposure to high heat (e.g., dishwasher, microwave). There has been some controversy linking these bowls to having a higher risk for harboring bacteria; however, that is only if you do not properly clean your pet’s water (and food) bowls as you would clean your dishes. This is a critical factor that is always overlooked.

Solution 2:
Several plant-based plastic alternatives to traditional bowls are also great options! Some of our favorites include:

Beco bowls, which include grooves to accommodate pets’ whiskers

Mine Pet Platters (for food), which promote interactive feeding.

Silicone pet bowls are also a great option (and travel-friendly!), but be sure to clean these regularly as they have been found to grow algae quite easily.

As a cat owner, you want to ensure that your feline companion stays hydrated and healthy. However, some cats can be quite picky when it comes to their water options, leading to reduced water intake. In this blog post, we’ll share some valuable tips to help increase your cat’s water consumption. From strategic bowl placement to choosing the right materials and incorporating running fountains, these suggestions will not only optimize your cat’s hydration but also improve their overall well-being.

Strategic Bowl Placement

Our expert team can help you choose the best bowl for your cat.

Cats generally prefer to have their water bowl away from their food bowl. Placing the water bowl on the opposite side of the room or in a separate area can encourage cats to drink more. By separating their food and water sources, you address their instinctual behavior and promote higher water intake. Try experimenting with different locations to find the one that suits your cat’s preferences best.

Offer Multiple Water Bowls

In addition to strategic placement, providing multiple water bowls throughout your home can further entice your cat to drink. This approach ensures that water is easily accessible regardless of which area your cat prefers to spend time in. It’s also helpful for households with multiple cats, as each feline can have their own designated water bowl. Consider placing bowls in various rooms or levels of your home to make it convenient for your cat to find water wherever they roam.

Choose the Right Bowl

The type of bowl you use can significantly impact your cat’s willingness to drink. Cats can experience whisker fatigue when their whiskers touch the sides of their bowl, leading to aversion to both food and water. By selecting wide and shallow bowls, you eliminate this discomfort and create a more inviting drinking experience for your cat.

Consider Running Water Fountains

You’ve likely seen adorable videos of cats drinking from kitchen and bathroom faucets. Many cats prefer running water, and a water fountain can mimic the appeal of a flowing stream. Running water fountains attract cats and encourage them to drink more. The continuous circulation helps maintain freshness and provides a sensory experience that entices even the pickiest of cats. Additionally, the sound and movement of the water can create an interactive and engaging environment for your cat, making hydration more enjoyable.

Expert Tip: Don’t be discouraged if your cat doesn’t drink from the fountain right away. Like most new things, your cat needs to adapt to the new fountain over time. It’s normal for a cat to take 4-6 weeks to begin using the new fountain. If you do not have success after 6 weeks, try moving the fountain to a different area of the house.

Maintain Clean Bowls and Fountains

Tiny dust and dirt particles floating in stagnant water will deter a cat from drinking from it. Additionally, water bowls will start to grow bacteria in less than 24 hrs, so it’s imperative to take proper precautions for cleanliness and safety. Wash your cat’s bowls with hot soapy water at least once a day. Water fountains should be disassembled at least once every 7-10 days so that all parts can be cleaned thoroughly. Be sure to replace the filter every 4-6 weeks, or more often depending on your water quality. Fill with fresh, clean water. We recommend using room temperature water because cat’s don’t generally prefer cold water.

Feed a Moisture-Rich Diet

Cats naturally have a remarkably low thirst drive and have adapted over centuries to thrive in dry environments. Additionally, cats’ tongues are incredibly inefficient for drinking water because they cannot scoop the water into their mouth. For these reasons, their bodies have evolved to absorb moisture through food sources. Therefore, it’s imperative to offer your cat a diet high in moisture. Canned wet food or premade raw food options offer optimal nutrition with high moisture and minimal carbohydrates. Since most feline ailments result from dehydration, a high moisture diet sets your cat up for whole body health and longevity.

Conclusion

Ensuring your cat’s proper hydration is crucial for their overall health and well-being. By implementing these tips, you can help your feline friend stay hydrated and prevent potential health issues associated with inadequate water intake. Remember to strategically place water bowls away from food, offer multiple water sources, choose suitable bowl materials, and consider investing in a running water fountain. Additionally, don’t forget to change the water daily and keep the food and water dishes clean to maintain optimal freshness. By following these guidelines, you’ll promote a healthy and happy lifestyle for your beloved cat.
