Ancient Dog Bone Discovery Changes Human History
/ NorthPoint PetsResearchers found the oldest dog bone (approx. 10,200 years old) while excavating a cave on the west coast of Alaska. This clue may prove that people migrated into North America much sooner than previously thought…maybe even before the glaciers were starting to melt!

It’s a common misnomer that you cannot supplement your pet’s diet with fresh food. In fact, current research supports the idea that adding even small amounts of fresh food can be a powerful way to boost your pet’s health.

Pet Food Allergies: Ingredient Quality and Processing Explained
/ NorthPoint PetsPet parents often mistakenly blame specific ingredients on their pet food label for their pet’s allergy symptoms. However, allergies to common food ingredients like chicken, beef or other whole foods does not make much sense. While pet food allergies do exist they are incredibly rare. What pets DO react to is the quality of the pet food ingredients and processing they go through. There can also be additional additives and other ingredients causing allergy symptoms – and they usually aren’t listed on the label! Check out this piece by board-certified veterinary nutritionist Dr. Donna Raditic & Dr. Chris Zink, one of the world’s top canine sports medicine and rehabilitation veterinarians.

What brought you to NPP?
Never in a million years did I think I would be switching from Healthcare to Pet care. Four years ago, my family and I adopted an amazing black lab from the Connecticut State Police after she retired. I soon figured out that Monica had extreme food and seasonal allergies. I heard about NPP so I went to seek out their expertise.
The amazing changes I witnessed with the improvement of Monica’s allergies and general wellness made me reconsider my career path, leading to my amazingly rewarding job today!!!

Tell us about your pets…
Well you know about Monica except what you don’t know is she will be 16 this July!! Yes 16!!!! My family also has a German Shepherd named Ammo who is 9 and also retired from the State Police. And last but not least Timmy – an awesome, big, vocal, orange tabby.[vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”4768″]– Timmy[vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”4770″]– Monica[vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”4771″]– Ammo[vc_empty_space height=”40px”]
What do you enjoy most about working at NPP?
Everything!!!! My co-workers are amazing. They are my second family. It is very rewarding to help educate customers and guide them to better their pets’ health. There is not a day that I do not enjoy coming to work.
What’s something you learned while working at NPP?
To LISTEN and get to know your customers. There is always more to their pets’ story than they think. Maybe a new toy or a great supplement would be a great addition.
What are your pets’ favorite treats or toys?
Timmy doesn’t have any favorite treats but he does enjoy a good cat nip!! Monica and Ammo own every stuffed animal in the store and love the WOOFERS!!! But really Monica thinks the store is a self serve buffet!! Typical lab.
What’s your favorite product?
I am a big fan of supplements and my favorite is glucosamine. Both of my dogs have felt great improvements with less joint pain since adding this to their daily raw meals.
Exploring the Pandemic Pet Food Supply Chain Challenges
/ Jenna HarrisonHave you noticed empty shelves in your grocer’s pet food aisle? Are you having a hard time finding your pet’s food, even from online retailers? Discover the reasons behind these shortages and learn why independent pet stores offer a reliable solution to your pet food supply concerns.
The Covid-19 Supply Chain Ripple
Some pet food brands, including Nestle Purina, Royal Canin, FreshPet, and even prescription diets, continue to see delays and shortages amidst the pandemic.

Shelves remain fully stocked at NorthPoint Pets despite supply shortages at large retailers.
These shortages have occurred everywhere from big box stores to vet offices. Inclement weather, ingredient sourcing delays, labor shortages, and importation delays due to COVID safety measures have all contributed to empty shelves. Some formulas have been modified or discontinued altogether due to sourcing challenges. Additionally, the sky-rocketing adoption rates have raised demand for pet food. Together these factors complete this equation for out-of-stock products.
Advantages of Small Independent Retailers
Unlike supermarkets and big box stores, independent pet stores have weathered the COVID storm with fully stocked shelves and a greater selection throughout. Small retailers have closer relationships with a variety of distributors. Consequently, they have greater access to more products if one distributor runs out. Plus, indie pet staff can provide up-to-date information – meaning they’re more likely to have the answers to your questions and solutions for your concerns regarding your pet’s diet. If you’re concerned about your pet’s food supply, stop in to your local small pet retailer for honest, appropriate recommendations and accurate information.
